Time of Christ: Can You Feed The Five Thousand?
9/26/2015

Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Matthew 14:14-22 KJV
(14) And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.
(15) And when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals.
(16) But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat.
(17) And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.
(18) He said, Bring them hither to me.
(19) And he commanded the multitude to sit down on the grass, and took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake, and gave the loaves to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.
(20) And they did all eat, and were filled: and they took up of the fragments that remained twelve baskets full.
(21) And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.
(22) And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

I once read a story of a little girl and the bread that was made with too much yeast. The story told how the bread rose and rose to the point it came out of the windows of the house. Finally the bread was divided in to bake able loaves and everyone had bread. Yet Jesus needed not an oven to prepare his bread. Nor did the gift of God need a fire but baskets to pick up all the left over bread. There was enough bread for another day. I might not be able to break bread to where it will feed five thousand people, yet I can be a basket for my Lord. I can not heal a soul or body, but I know the healer. Right now I have a friend that needs prayer that needs that miracle. All I can do is pray, wait and hope. I have been waiting over five years for this miracle. It is heart breaking to know the cure has not come, nor the spiritual cure. Some time the cure takes the baking of the oven and sometimes it only takes the breaking of the bread to feed the soul and body.

I often wonder why Lord I have received so many miracles when others have suffered and died. Why Lord, can I not make enough bread to feed the multitude. It is not a lack faith, but perhaps a lack of trying. Yet God blessed me in allowing me to be a carrier of the bread of life. Life bread that always has extra bread available. When a mother and father needs a miracle so desperately one can not help wonder why God does not grant it. One heals the sick through out scripture and the miracle seems unavailable for the moment. The blind man was cured after fifty years, and a man not able to get to the pool of healing was able to pick up his mat and walk. Jesus feed both the four thousand and the five thousand, but there people starving and yet food is provided daily for those in need around the world by out stretch hands of those who can.

Do we ask for the impossible, I think not, it is not His timing is or it is always a possibility. Yet it is the grief of the possibility never coming to pass in this life that is the hardest to understand, when Christ performed so many miracles to feed and heal both the body, mind and the soul. It easy for people to grasp the parables, and even a miracle or two but it that miracle for oneself that seems impossible and sometimes for another when you know they are at death door. Is it because we can see the door of death and not the door of life for a friend. We can only see the multitude and not the potential of the few loaves of bread. Are we looking at the wrong end of the miracle.

Jesus wants us to see the potential not the crowd. The one with the potential to make what we seek a reality. Do we only see the impossibility and not the potentiality of what Jesus can do. Is our faith only in the limitations of normal human reality and not in the heavenly realm of godly miracles. I can fix a flat tire if I am strong enough and have a spare, but I can not fix a leak in the brake line with out the money to fix it. The reality is the potentiality of what I can see, not what God can do. Money can fix a flat and the brake line, yet it takes faith to believe God can fix the tire or break line without money. It takes faith believing in the impossible or a friend.

The crowd had the potential of going in near by cities and buying their dinner, yet Jesus wanted to do the miracle. The miracle with only a few loaves and a few fish. It was not that it was impossible for the crowd to get what they need to eat. Yet it was impossible for the disciples to see the reality of Jesus taking only what was provided to feed the multitude. Yet Jesus had the disciples to get the crowd to sit down and he began to break the bread after he gave thanks. As he broke that bread and disciples passed it out despite the size of the crowd there seems to be an abundance. So much more bread then those loaves could provide. In fact the leftovers were taken up after the crowd left.

God wants to provide and He has plenty to give but so often we look at our ability and not God’s ability to move the mountain. It takes God’s ability to move the mountain. Yet if we have bull dozers it only take a tone of fuel and good equipment. Yet if God wants to shake the earth to move a mountain then it will be in his ability to move the mountain with us all sitting and watching the reality of God’s fury. Not one of us can change the shaking of the earth. Yet we can believe in God’s ability to do it and accept that if God does it, then it is His will to feed the people.

The miracle with the potential of life, not if we will it, but in the power and the hands of God. Had anyone left the scene of Jesus and gone toward a village no one knows, but we know Jesus sat the crowd down at his will and began to feed them the food their bodies and soul needed before His journey to the cross. The multitudes came to see the provisions of Jesus whether through physical healing, and spiritual healing. Taking both the ability all ready the individual and explaining simple truth and physical healing that was impossible by the doctors. Jesus taught forgiveness that must come from people and from God. God’s forgiveness granted upon repentance and human mercy only in the hands of humans. Even when human’s can’t forgive, God already has. The provision already provide ready to hand out for the multitude, but bread of life must be given for it to be received by the crowd.

Dear Heavenly Father bring the healing of life to my friend, and to his parents. That the hope is not gone, but only attainable by your mercy and grace in his life. That the bread of life is there for the taking the impossible miracle only gained according to your will. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
