Every Sunday A Psalms: Do You Know How To Repent?
9/06/2015

Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Psalms 51:1-19 KJV
(1) To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba. Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
(2) Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
(3) For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
(4) Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
(5) Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
(6) Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.
(7) Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.
(8) Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
(9) Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.
(10) Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
(11) Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
(12) Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
(13) Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
(14) Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness.
(15) O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.
(16) For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.
(17) The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
(18) Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
(19) Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

To repent sounds like an easy task to undertake but for many going to the altar is one of the most scariest things in the world. Even if a friend walks with you down the isle, that friend can not repent for you. The matter of repentance is something that must come within the heart. Last few weeks I talked about David sin and his repentance, yet what kind of heard did David have to repent. A broken and contrite heart. A sorrowful heart. One sorry for sin, one sorry for the injustice of sin they committed. Why did David not loose his anointing from God because of the sin of killing a soldier who David had committed adultery with. His wife. He placed him on the front lines in a place he would likely die. The odds of survival was slim to none. Yet David sorrow was heard. His sin against God and man for taking a life.

Had Cain not sacrificed his brother for jealousy over Abel’s sacrifice to and relationship with God. Had no Cain not repented though God confronted him. He only got angry. David had a broken and contrite heart. To be purged with hyssop to be purged with the bitterness of one’s sin. The confrontation of wrong in one’s life can lead to sorrowful state of mind and heart. It the acknowledgement of wrong. Cain never felt guilty for his sin. David wept and fasted because of his sin had caused his son to grow ill and would die because of David’s sin. Yet when judgment came David’s own life had been spared and his life was corrected to a point that the world would know of his sin. Yet the voice of the world would only bring David to repentance and remorse that would cause him to turn from his sin and deal with the results of his sins of Israel being against him for a little while.

The conviction of the sin is brings about the sprinkling of the blood sacrifice to take away the sin. The hyssop used as the sponge to lift up the vinegar to Jesus would had probably medical properties of a time of aroma to mask the smell of vinegar laced with numbing agent. The interesting things about the hyssop it was used in the sprinkling of the blood in sacrifices also poured on the sacrifices offered for sin. The burning of the meat would have had a certain odor or stench, that would be masked by the hyssop. Hyssop was used to spread the blood the purged the people of sin, that purged or anointed the objects that were being concentrated to God.

The hyssop a covering of sin and impurity. When Nathan came to tell David a parable, he found himself guilty of sin. The parable covering his sin in a story. Yet when understood by the heart brought repentance and sorrow. David understanding his sin was able then to repent. Because of God’s love for David and because he offer the contrite heart and broken spirit before God, it was enough to be healed of his sin. We to must purge our hearts of sin with a broken and contrite spirit. A contrite spirit one to cause to bow to God. It is knowledge of imperfection. Yet the blood Christ was poured out for you and me. The sprinkling of the blood symbol of the covering of the blood of Calvary. The understanding we broke God’s commands and our heart bows to God. David lost his son, not because of unrepentance but because God took the most precious gift David had as offering, a potential heir to the throne. The baby brother one day would be king. In truth Solomon took after not the ways of His Father completely, but the ways of his own heart with the knowledge and religiosity of faith. The contrite spirit never seen in Solomon’s life. Though he acknowledge his sin.

Do you acknowledge your sin but never repent, never have sorrow only animosity toward someone bring it up. Sin recall should bring about repentance nnd sorrow. Not attitude so what I am guilty. Attitude of Cain or David. Cain still got safety in his life, but his soul was lost for eternity. David soul was saved for eternity with repentance.

Dear Heavenly Father bring us to our knees at the sin our life. Enable our hearts to feel the sorrow of pain of the sin in our life that causes both a stumbling block in our relationship to you and others, but also causes us to try and ignore the problem making us bitter for that mistake. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
