Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Luke 16:20-31 KJV
(20) And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores,
(21) And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
(22) And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;
(23) And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
(24) And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.
(25) But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.
(26) And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
(27) Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:
(28) For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
(29) Abraham saith unto him, They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.
(30) And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.
(31) And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

There are two types of people in this story: A man of wealth and means that cared not for the poor outside his home. He flaunted his wealth everyday. Then there was a poor man that had nothing but the ability to beg for scrapes from a rich man table who would not feed him. He would not feed him and so the man died. Yet the poor man was rich in faith. What is interesting the poor man had faith but he starved. Yet he was welcome into the best home imaginable, the place called heaven. Many poor people go without a meal or two just to make ends meet. It sounds crazy for a poor person to waste money on things they really can not afford, but they do occasionally. A little hope now and then goes a long ways, when paying bills, and take caring of life necessities. Yet this beggar had no hope but his faith in God and he when he died he went to his finally resting place the Jews called Abraham’s Bosom. Speaking of the household of faith.

The rich man had all the things money could buy but could not buy his way into heaven, not even with good deeds and apparently he was intelligent enough to know good deeds and works did not get him into heaven. Yet he did not know that the beggar outside his home would look down on him from his heavenly home. He did not know he look at Abraham and beg for a cool drink. He did not know he would feel fire intensity that would continue to burn his flesh. He did not know he would long for a drink of water to cool his tongue. He did not know the compassion he have for his family to know not to come this way, yet Abraham said if they did not believe the evidence of things God provide through those prophets they to be facing eternity in hell. God had been a witness to the rich man but he had not believed the prophet or the teachers. Yet this tells us so much more it not our works, or wealth that save us but our faith in God. God does not always give us comfort in this life but He will heaven. If the only hope we have is heaven, then that is what we have. Our eternal home much more precious then anything in life. Better to be sold out on God then to be sold out to the things of our human hands.

This was the time before and during Christ that this story is told, but God sent His Only Son has the rich man desire to tell the story of faith once more. The prophesy give of his Son to trust in God’s word for eternity and then the promise sacrifice for you and me. Up from the grave Christ arose in victory over death and for all that believe will have eternal life. Not a fairy tale my friend but a story of truth told not in one years writing but down through ages of history from the first man and woman to the cross and beyond to his return that we wait for. Do you believe if so repent of your sins and live for Jesus. Caring for those you meet and see, not to do it to gain salvation, but to do it to testify of the one that saved your soul from hell.

Dear Heavenly Father help us to walk in your Son’s footsteps, who died for us. To live a life of faith and hope for eternity in you. To believe the story of the cross and resurrection that brings eternal life. The beggar had nothing but faith and gave all he could. Christ giving all he had and died for our sins. We thank you Father for we were once lost but now set free through faith in your Son. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study for Devotion:Revelation 14:12-13 KJV
(12) Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.
(13) And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.
