The Call Of God In The Burning Bush
10/10/2016

Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Exodus 3:1-14 KJV
(1) Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
(2) And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
(3) And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.
(4) And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.
(5) And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.
(6) Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
(7) And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;
(8) And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.
(9) Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me: and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them.
(10) Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.
(11) And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?
(12) And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.
(13) And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?
(14) And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you.

God spoke to Moses through a burning bush. The bush was not burning and impossibility when the flames were going to and fro through the limbs. The sight alone had to be disturbing but to have God speak to Moses had to be more disturbing to him. The fear of God fell upon him. Until you have the fear of God fall upon you, you have no clue what this means. The call of God on your life and the way you respond might just show exactly the type of people God’s is going to send you too. Moses not afraid to question God but had a fear of God. His questioning was not of disrespect but more of a needing to know why me Lord? Why did you chose me for this task? God response is not a reason why but who God is and the fact He would be going with Moses to let his people go. The complication of this story is that Moses was not even sure he wanted to go, in fact he would need someone to speak for him. Is attitude of faith was much like the people he would be serving. Whether inherited disorder, or just the type of people, the Bible is not clear on. The Hebrew people would be a stubborn group in the wilderness.

This is the first attempt of God to call Moses into service. Yet it would not be his last communication with Moses. Ezekiel had the attitude of send me. Jeremiah and Isaiah more like okay Lord. Samuel would obey Eli voice by saying Lord your servant is listening. Though many of God’s chosen said Lord send me, I will go willingly, not all did. Moses one of the greatest leaders in scripture as far as man, was one not so sure of this call God had on his life. Jonah would be a runner, so would King Saul upon his anointment as king for he hide. Yet when God’s call came it change and defined a person into more then just a person, but God raised them up into the calling and role He had for their life.

God knew all about Moses and the second time he would speak to Moses he would tell him that those that sought his life were dead. Yet this assurance and his father in law willingness to let him go was not enough to spur Moses on that he had to ask for a spokesman. Moses would have the greatest God leading him and yet he asked for a human companion to speak for him. God promised to put words in his mouth, and it was not good enough for Moses. Yet all the things Moses questioned God about he never once ask God how is that bush burning without burning up.

God is a God that when He calls you up he expects us to obey. He knows our questions and our hearts, but our response needs to be like Ezekiel yes Lord send me. Yet our question might be more Lord why me? Why did you choose me? God takes people that might not look like likely candidates and sends them forth. He takes people that will ask questions and not always willing to say okay whatever you say Lord. God takes people and molds them into the people into the call He has for them. The army takes young people and molds them into soldiers that can fight. They are require to do feats that they never themselves thought possible. Moses would be going to speak to Pharaoh and though he grew up in the palace this was not a normal request to let a people go, especially ones enslaved to the king. God if he calls you to do a special task at some point you will be doing something you thought you never do. Yet it all be for God’s glory and honor.

There nothing wrong with asking God questions, however realize you will be doing his bidding either willingly or unwillingly. Lot call to leave Sodom was not willingly leaving, but being dragged from his home. Lot’s leaving was for his protection, Moses was free of Egypt, but he had family still there. One’s duty to family to free them of the evil is not always easy. Yet it is one duty to protect and honor.

Dear Heavenly Father as you call each of your children into your service, help them ask the questions of their heart so that they will understand your purpose and honor you in obedience. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

(1) And he said unto me, Son of man, stand upon thy feet, and I will speak unto thee.
(2) And the spirit entered into me when he spake unto me, and set me upon my feet, that I heard him that spake unto me.
