Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Luke 1:1-3 KJV
(1) Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
(2) Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
(3) It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

Several things I think concerns some that claim they only follow the Gospels is that Paul’s instruction to the church told little about the life of Christ. What is important about the Gospels if the rest of the Bible only speaks of daily living as a believer. The Gospel of Jesus is important because He is the founder and author of the Christian faith. Though the Gospels are record of four accounts of Jesus. Each account written for different groups of people. Each sharing the importance of Jesus ministry and for us to follow. Paul had Theophilus write these accounts down recorded by the apostles and passed down from one generation to the next of believers. Yet before the Gospels stores would be lost it need to be recorded, the memory of who Jesus is was important to the believers of faith. Without Jesus story we would not know the Messiah had come, or that we are to look to Him in faith following in his footsteps.

The recorded retained was the retelling by the Holy Spirit of faith. No doubt there were other stories of faith but these for accounts were stories that were consistent between the groups of believers. Though some Gospels have one story expanded upon or another story that another does not have it does not mean it was not consistent with the teaching of Jesus. Yet scripture is consistent that Jesus did miracles and went about doing good before He was crucified. Luke would be the only book that would carry the account of Mary and Matthew would carry the account of Joseph. And Luke and Matthew would carry not only the message of Jesus’ birth but also a story each that was a witness of the event. The Gospel is important to the Christians because it how we ought to live our life in service for God and have faith in Jesus and have eternal life.

Dear Heavenly Father give us the grace to understand that we are to serve you as Christ did and that each account preserved is for our benefit so we know the truth about Jesus. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study for Devotion:

John 20:30-31 KJV
(30) And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
(31) But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
