Shadow Of The Almighty

Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Exodus 20:18-26 KJV
(18) And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.
(19) And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.
(20) And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.
(21) And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.
(22) And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.
(23) Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.
(24) An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.
(25) And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.
(26) Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.

God is the light in the city at the end of Bible. In that city there is no need of light because God shines in the city. It is hard to understand the darkness that surrounds God and yet Moses walked into the darkness into the shadow of God to speak to Him. The Ten commandments read to the children of Israel and the voice of God heard within the camp of Israel, yet Israel feared God after hearing the voice they sent Moses into the darkness to talk to God for them. To be in the shadows of the Almighty is not to be able to see the Holiness of God. After our mortal selves are only holy through faith, not by purity of the flesh. We are still in the flesh in this earth and Moses was still flesh as he walked in the shadow of the Lord Almighty. Covered by His Shadow because of sin. What commandment had Moses not committed some might wonder. Yet he was still able to approach God Almighty. He had killed the enemies of God, and destroyed the idol of Baal. Yet his sin perhaps more understood with the anger of breaking of the first tablets of stone. Moses had gone against the thou shalt not kill after asking God to pardon Israel. He knew not what was going on down below him in the valley when the Golden calf stood and people bowing and cutting themselves because of this calf. Yet after the law was written down once more and read finally to Israel, Moses before the Israelites went and stood in the shadow of the Almighty. The darkness that surrounded God could not compare to his brightness. Israel was afraid but Moses came back unharmed. Moses was not a perfect man but was saved through faith.

If Moses had not been saved the holiness of God would of killed Moses. Moses and the people promised to obey God’s law but the people themselves did not want to approach God or stand in his shadow afraid of God’s Holiness. Afraid because of their sin. Afraid because they understood not the power of God that just spoke to them. Afraid because they felt unworthy to stand in God’s presents. The reality of God before them with a need of protection of someone between them. Moses had saved them when he came off that mountain and said who for God and who not and killed those who were not for God. If God’s wrath had poured out there were some that would not have been saved. Moses became their go between from the day of calf to the day of commandments being read. Moses was already acting as go between to God as leader of the camp. Yet as Moses stepped in the shadows it became official that one man would speak for the people. A man not worthy of the position, but called because God chose him to bring the people out of Egypt. Moses had thought he needed a go between to Pharaoh and Aaron his brother was chosen. Yet when one thinks about it was not Aaron connection through the palace only because of Moses being saved by the princess of Egypt. How many times had Aaron gone with his mother or sister to the palace no one knows. But the family got to care of Moses even when going to the Palace. Point is this Moses needed a go between to the devil of Egypt and now the people need a go between to God. Moses and Aaron were like superheroes to these people but Aaron was not afraid of God’s wrath but afraid of people. Yet with Moses before the people Aaron was no longer afraid to obey God. Even Aaron did not go into the shadow of the Almighty only Moses. The law of God was established between Moses and God.

As believers in Christ are you walking the shadow of God almighty covered by his darkness that covers the sin of humanity the filth of our garments, our unworthiness to stand in his presence, but not unworthy to be covered by his protection of his Son through the cross of Calvary. Jesus stands in the gap only one worthy of the position because of His perfection as God’s Only Begotten Son, who obeyed God completely even to the cross. No one else has walked the road of perfection without a bump along the way. Are you following the one worthy to stand before the Almighty or the one that is protected by the shadow of the Almighty. Jesus is worthy to stand before His Father’s presence not covered by the shadow of God but sitting at his right hand. Yet in his death the shadow of God covered his dead Son. The shadow of God came with a quake upon his Son’s death. God no longer looking into the darkness at his Son but turning away not to see what man had done. God covered Moses with his shadow because of his unworthiness. Moses was later only allowed to see the backside of God with the hand of God covering him in the clef of a rock.

Be not afraid of the shadow of the Almighty for it is for your protection and Christ protection avails through faith in Him. The Great go between man and God is Jesus who is the word of God. Christ covering his through his blood. God sees the blood and knows we covered because Christ paid our sin debt.

Dear Heavenly Father protect us by Son and your shadow that you see not sin but speak to our hearts the truth of your word that is eternal through faith in you and your Son. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
