Daily Devotions:by Christina Farris

Romans 7:9-25 KJV
(9) For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.
(10) And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death.
(11) For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.
(12) Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
(13) Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
(14) For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
(15) For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
(16) If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.
(17) Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
(18) For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
(19) For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do.
(20) Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.
(21) I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.
(22) For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
(23) But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
(24) O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
(25) I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

Disobedience to God’s laws lead to death and the grave. To some it might seem better to just break all of God’s laws just to die. Ever have one of those mornings that nothing you do is right. It not that you are what most would consider evil, but one can not seem to get whatever they do is right. It one of them mornings where you feel you got out on the wrong side of the bed. I think the author Paul is almost in a state of doing just that. He got up on the wrong side of his mat. He finds himself warring after sin of the law, but at the same time desiring the things of the flesh. I do not think what paul speaking of is necessarily evil, but it is the law of sin and death, where all men come through. We were all born of the curse of the law of obedience to God. Yet sin is death. Disobedience to God can cost a person their life if out in the jungles or war zones of life without obeying His Spirit.

Yet the cost of obeying God can divide homes, divide friendship, divide countries, divide the world. Sin is not about being evil, but being disobedient to what God asked you to do. It not always about the law that points out sin, but about the Spirit and obeying the Spirit of God. That time line between doing God’s will and doing the will of man. The will of the flesh and desires of the human heart.

Paul perhaps wanted to settle down and could not because his of God’s will in his life and he had a desire to obey God. Perhaps it was the journey to Rome and not to stay in Jerusalem that caused this problem at first. Paul knew that law of man was changeable, but the law of God was not. God’s law does not change. The law of death and the law and consequence for disobedience is death. Can we obey God despite the human desire to do something else? Remember just because today is not going right that does not mean that sin, but it is sin if you choose not to obey God. That will to disobey God is worse, because God tells you to obey him, not just for glory, but your protection.

Obedience to God’s law does not save you, because not one law brings you to saving grace, but the law of faith in Christ Jesus makes you free from the law of sin. The law of sin can not save you, but the law of faith can.

Dear Heavenly Father, even through those days of imperfection remind us obedience to you is more important, even when our human nature tells us something else. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
