Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Acts 1:2-14 KJV
(2) Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
(3) To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
(4) And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
(5) For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
(6) When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
(7) And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
(8) But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
(9) And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
(10) And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
(11) Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
(12) Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.
(13) And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.
(14) These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

Last greatest speech that Jesus gave while on earth would be the great commission. Jesus spoke to his disciples about baptizing the people in the name of the Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit can only come from above. The Holy Spirit baptism is from God himself to the believer, and it comes by the power of belief in God’s word as in the story of conversion of Cornelius and his family and the education about the Holy Spirit in Acts 19. Proof of the baptism begins in Acts 2, yet it was not the first baptism of the Holy Spirit. King David was filled with the Holy Spirit, as was Saul. King Saul still demonstrated his free will and lack of desire to follow God. One might think they can control the baptism of God’s fire on one’s life but that is misunderstood and perhaps more so from only New Testament believers, because the idea of God being able to take charge of unbeliever does not seem possible. Yet the power of the Holy Spirit has nothing to do with belief as much as being under the influence of God to do the will of God. If one thinks about our leaders in office some laws that are passed are due to the authority of God alone. Yet other laws are clearly man’s decision.

To talk as if God controls a nonbeliever is to sound blasphemous. Yet devil authority is inhibited by the power of God and yet even God allowed the devil to control Judas for his purpose. The one time Jesus did not cast out the devil was in one of his own men. Yet the power of the Holy Spirit is allowing the works of God to be exemplified. Allowing His teaching and authority to become alive in the world we live in. The baptism of the Holy Spirit allows a person to do the works of God and to exemplify God so others can see truth of God and who He is. King Saul baptism came to halt and God finally turned Saul over the devil.

Anyone can teach about God and Jesus, but God is the only one that truly can teach about being lead and baptized by His Spirit in a reality since of the word. Yet the gentiles would be given the gift of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was not just a gift for the Jews. Seventy elders in the Old Testament prophesied by the power of the Holy Spirit yet were all these men necessarily believers. After all how long had they been in the wilderness and fought against believing.

The fact remains the Holy Spirit will do as He pleases and you cannot control God. Even the Romans and the Jewish leaders found out that could not get rid of Jesus by their own will. Missionaries whether at home or abroad have gone to share the gospel of Jesus and some people were in opposition of them going, soon learned that was God’s will for these people lives. God used missionaries to carry the Gospel into places that knew not God or desired to know God. When God wants to speak, God is going to speak, and if those nearest by will not speak the Gospel, God will send a missionary to the people.

The Holy Spirit baptism is about hope. God cannot live in unclean vessel; no, God will not remain in unclean vessel. King Saul’s own will took away his relationship with God. His desire to disobey God was greater then his will to obey God. God was not going to allow his image be destroyed by the King. Those who knew Saul had seen how the abandonment of God’s Spirit allowed the evil spirit of darkness to control Saul.

The baptism of fire is it greater then what already was in the past. Jesus came teaching the unbeliever about His Father. Jesus came teaching about the power of God’s word to heal, to give signs and to do wonders. Jewish people were to teach all people, through out history. There were gentiles that were believers. And believers could get saved. Jesus himself taught all these things about his Father grace to all people, even down to the harlots and the outcast of society. What is different the Roman’s and Greeks were not of the area originally. They were people not accustom to the power of God. The education of God beginning with education through teachers, yet some still caught in religious cult of Roman world as well as the religious groups of paganism that had gone through Israel before Israel was placed in bondage. There were Roman soldiers converted at the time of Christ. There were Jews converted at the time of Christ, there were Arabs that were saved at the time of Christ.

Jesus is about the global teaching of God and his salvation through the cross He bore that was to take away the sins of the world. How hard is it to say I forgive you. How hard is it to allow someone to hurt you and say I forgive you. Crime unpunished is not always crime that not forgiven, neither is crime that is punished is forgiven or unforgiven necessarily. When one decides to obey the laws of man and the laws of God, something are forgiven and other thins are not. Sin of society is punishable or forgivable by society. Christ bowed to the laws of society that condemned him for who He was. Yet He did so saying you might think I am gone but I will rise again. Just because you destroy me, I will rise again. As atheistic countries around the world began to open their doors to the gospel like in Russia, one cannot help but think how long were the doors of Russia shut, before God re entered unannounced by His entry into their world. Some might say how long did it take atheist to shut the door of Christ before understanding the need of Christ. The need of a Savior is necessary to set people free from oppression, and control of the devil.

The minute the devil thinks he can destroy freedom is the day the people that support freedom better stand up and fight. The power of the Holy Spirit allows the enemy to prevail only for a short time. Some might even say that short time is way to long. God allowed Jesus to be buried two days before seeing His Son rise again. Two days were not to long, because his word still flourished during that time by the holy men of old that walked into Jerusalem. The testimony of the walking dead that was now alive.

The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not something to fear, but someone to say yes Lord I will serve and desire to serve, keep my feet in the right path and help me follow your leadership in my life. Teach me to speak so others will understand me whether I understand that language these people speak or not. The baptism of fire of the Holy Spirit is about igniting the world for Jesus in an away they will understand, not always teaching by the religious traditions of our world, but teaching in way that people will listen first to God word and then also to religious institutions of our day about Jesus. Are you a little unorthodox for Jesus? Is the Gospel coming forth in love, joy, faith, long suffering and speaking truth to all men about who God and Jesus is. If the answer is yes, then you speak the language of the Holy Spirit. Jesus teaching might not of sounded like text book but they explained the things of God to a modern world of his day. Yet everything taught was from scripture of the Old Testament. God still teaches love by His Spirit and to glorify Him. This teaching still exists from Old Testament. Sacrificial laws would be paid to the government with money or jail. God was no longer going to deal with our sin in social condemnation, beyond his chastisement for a purpose. You are free to worship God no matter where you are in life, just realize yours and my sin never pleased God.

Jesus is coming one day to reclaim His church, but meanwhile the baptism of fire of the Holy Spirit is in the world and for all that will receive His power. Jesus instructed the disciples to teach and to preach about who He and His Father was. He was not going to allow the disciples to do these things in their own power but the power of the Holy Spirit. He was going to baptize them with the fire that could not be quenched.

Dear Heavenly Father help us to learn to walk by your Spirit teaching about you and your Son. Teach us to walk by your Spirit, and to glorify you through obedience to your word and Spirit, so your will can be accomplished in our life and in lives of those around us. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
