The Religious Leader Court and The Denial
03/24/2016

Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Matthew 26:58-75 KJV
(58) But Peter followed him afar off unto the high priest's palace, and went in, and sat with the servants, to see the end.
(59) Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death;
(60) But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,
(61) And said, This fellow said, I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.
(62) And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? what is it which these witness against thee?
(63) But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
(64) Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
(65) Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy.
(66) What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.
(67) Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,
(68) Saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ, Who is he that smote thee?
(69) Now Peter sat without in the palace: and a damsel came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee.
(70) But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest.
(71) And when he was gone out into the porch, another maid saw him, and said unto them that were there, This fellow was also with Jesus of Nazareth.
(72) And again he denied with an oath, I do not know the man.
(73) And after a while came unto him they that stood by, and said to Peter, Surely thou also art one of them; for thy speech bewrayeth thee.
(74) Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crew.
(75) And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out, and wept bitterly.

What right did the religious leaders have in putting Jesus on trial considering they were not in power in the land of Israel during the Roman Empire? Probably as adult this was one question that occurred to me, is how could these religious people even begin a court hearing in the wee hours of the morning without legal power. Upon examining history one can learn that social laws were still maintained by religious order. It was a type of control use to handle small things that were not imposed by legal courts. One has to remember that Roman had a legal system and so did the Jews before their captivity into Babylon, Assyrian, Persian, Greek and then Roman Empires. It was to these empire advantage to allow certain of the old legal system to have say over a people when it came to small claims court and so forth. It help keep that people at peace during transitions of different legal systems as well as explaining new more rigorous laws such as capital punishment.

Jesus was a part of priesthood. Yet He was also the son of the blessed mother Mary. Mark’s Gospel records mention of it in the trial in Mark 14:61. Reference to the virgin Mary who had conceived Jesus by the Holy Spirit. A note of who this man was and is. A note of who was facing trial the one said to be the redeemer of Israel. Yet now no redemption would come with a death of a man. Had all this escaped those speaking against Jesus that knew he was of the blessed mother. Something to think on. The importance of the religious trial to establish who Jesus was and the accusations that were against Jesus. Yet even the false witness could not come together to speak the blaspheme to have him go to trial.

Peter denied who Jesus was, perhaps it was important to deny for Peter was closes to Jesus. Was the closes man upon the earth. Yet the denial is fitting for his protection. Yet it allowed him entry to listen to the going ons of the trial. A trial that identified who Jesus was by parenthood, as well as his words and speeches. They wanted to nail Jesus on the cross for his words. Yet they could not. Yet they did have something against Jesus the crowd had waved palm branches in the streets and Jesus refused to stop them. Claiming the very rocks would cry out if he quieted the men. Claiming kingship without many words of proof. This kingship causing the final trial that would lead him to his death. Jesus did claim that if the temple was destroy that He could raise it up in three days. Was this too something to think about as a threat on there nation’s security. Go around claiming to destroy something of importance and see how long it takes for the cops to be banging on your door and questioning you, or handcuffing you, once the crime is committed whether one is guilty or not. I knew a person who prophesied an event before it happened and it shook not only them but the one person that heard it. Both figuring the other must have been involved but neither had a thing to do with it. The question then came did someone over hear the conversation was it possible. Only if there was a microphone, in the area that could of picked up the conversation. For that person I do believe God wanted to truly shake them to the reality of what man could do or his power could do, and either way it mattered not. There is a point with the little story about being God’s will or not, Jesus trial looked like a set up. For those who believe in the power of God, it was God and not religious order or legal law that brought the trial of Jesus. Yet for those not so convinced by prophesy being about the Messiah both Old and New Testament, one thing is for certain the temple being raised spoke of Jesus body, meant Jesus was going to die some how and be resurrected, trial was convenient. Without the prophesy of the Old Testament the trial of Jesus was a convenient way to get rid of a rebel and a leader that was causing an uprising among the people. The crowd was crying Hosanna to the King in reference to Jesus in one day, only to loose points with the people in one day by the words lead by the chief priest to crucify Jesus, based on evidence only understood by the Priesthood. The Priesthood hearts were harden because of greed. As the rooster crow twice the prophecy of Peter’s denial fulfilled. Peter became alert to his denial of Jesus. Something under normal circumstances never would have happened. The Priesthood faced that same type of thing of denial and accountability for their actions based on prophesy. God listens to a repented heart if one will ask forgiveness, especially when it was according to His will and purpose. For Jesus came to die for all mankind. There were religious leaders that believed after the resurrection. Yet not all would receive truth. Yet those who did would carry the story of the cross and the trial of Jesus. How He paid the price of man’s sin. His resurrection important because without it victory over religious and legal law never would happen. Jesus rising up form the grave demonstrated Jesus authority over death and the grave. If Jesus set you free you are free indeed.

Dear Heavenly Father thank you for the reminder of the burden of prophesy as well as the ability for trickery to be used in our modern world, remind us daily how true your word is. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
