03/13/2016

Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Psalms 77:1-20 KJV
(1) To the chief Musician, to Jeduthun, A Psalm of Asaph. I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave ear unto me.
(2) In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted.
(3) I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.
(4) Thou holdest mine eyes waking: I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
(5) I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times.
(6) I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with mine own heart: and my spirit made diligent search.
(7) Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more?
(8) Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore?
(9) Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.
(10) And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.
(11) I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.
(12) I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.
(13) Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?
(14) Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people.
(15) Thou hast with thine arm redeemed thy people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah.
(16) The waters saw thee, O God, the waters saw thee; they were afraid: the depths also were troubled.
(17) The clouds poured out water: the skies sent out a sound: thine arrows also went abroad.
(18) The voice of thy thunder was in the heaven: the lightnings lightened the world: the earth trembled and shook.
(19) Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known.
(20) Thou leddest thy people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

I can not forget the hours of night as a child that I could not sleep. As a child was taught to stay in bed and try to go back to sleep. If the whole house was quiet then all was at rest except for me lying awake trying to go back to sleep. As an adult the rules of change to getting out of bed in the middle of the night to the pacing of the floor and seldom of the resting until either sleep arrives or morning. As USA enters daylight saving time, I only again reminded of how I lost an hour of sleep by the time going forward an hour, yet time is no reason to pace the floor.

As Asaph looked upon the stars and moon at night with his mind wondering with ever sound that creaks, he found himself thinking about the things of God. Maybe even counting his blessings of all God did for him. How God took him through both the good and the bad. How much he gained in his relationship with God and how wonderful God truly was to him. There were times he felt alienated from God and was in troubled because of the distance of God from him. His presence absent in times of distress and when he laid in illness or unrest. Yet he knew God presence still existed. He knew how God had redeemed Israel on more then one occasion and even his own soul.

As he thought on the ways God dealt with Israel he was reminded of how God had put leaders in the life of Israel like Aaron and Moses. How these leaders with the power of God triumph even in the night. His mediation being on those things he knew of a gracious merciful God who leads his people and spoke to them in thunder even though the people were fearful of Him.

Do we complain in the night of the lack of sleep? Do we think of God and his wonderful works? What about his tender mercy and grace even when we feel far from God. Do we think of the suffering of Jesus as we lay in our own weakness? Do we see God’s saving grace has God raised up Jesus from the grace and set up a royal priesthood that would not fade. Do we see the sanctuary of our Lord as we meditate on the great things He has done. Next time count your blessings and see what God has done in your life when you can not rest. Your outlook from trouble will change to see the wonderful works of God not only life of his people long ago but in your life today. It okay to speak to God about the absent you feel of his present, with knowing He is still there. Its okay to speak of your trouble as if you spoke to your best friend. God knows your trouble and if you know your scripture even in times of trouble God defeats the problem and has total victory.

Dear Heavenly Father thank you for grace and mercy in the storms of the night of our life. Reminding your children of your wonderful work and how you defeat the enemy and how miracles came forth from your hand. How your voice spoke to the people long ago. You are our deliver and salvation in times of trouble and I thank you Lord. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
