Time Of Christ: By Whose Authority
03/12/2016

Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Matthew 21:23-32 KJV
(23) And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?
(24) And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.
(25) The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?
(26) But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.
(27) And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.
(28) But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.
(29) He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.
(30) And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.
(31) Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.
(32) For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

The need for repentance was order by God; this is not about going to John the Baptist. John the Baptist is only symbol of the prophet teaching the people to first repent and be baptized into the faith learns the laws and truth about God. Yet the question came about by using John the Baptist in regards to authority. Authority to call a sinner to repentance if it be of God or not. The call of repentance and to learn the things of God whether it be through a prophet or through Christ. Jesus did not show authority over John when talking about authority. Instead he went about the need of repentance and faith. The religious leaders taught repentance, yet believed not John or Jesus. They taught the need to repent but understood not where the authority that someone else had to do the same thing. Tradition had weight them down that it consumed their faith. They repented and taught repentance to see change in a person life and gave not this authority to God.

The trend in the world to change to turn from evil whether a believer in God is in vogue. It is a reality of repentance and yet, no one questions the need to repent. Repent means to turn away from evil. Yet no one teaches to believe beyond those in the church or teachers of faith. Yet the need to repent is taught by most religious institutions that believe to be good, even if their standards line not up with other groups. Groups like alcoholic anonymous that teach to turn away from drinking, but do not necessarily teach to turn to Jesus. The question then comes is Jesus superior to other faiths. For the believer Christ to turn to Jesus is most essential. To turn and do things Jesus way is important.

The question though was what authority, who told John to preach repentance and who told Jesus. Hindu’s even practice repentance. Yet they worship a cow. Yet for a believer in Christ they would not go seeking a cow for repentance. If I look at what is taught in the world beyond my faith repentance is a key to universalism. Yet the authority by religious zealots to who should teach this is issue. Why is because to repent with out God in the equation is taking God’s ability to forgive out. Jesus taught forgiveness, but also repentance. Yet also the key to believe in God.

By whose authority did John and Jesus both teach by authority of God’s word spoken by the prophets? John was the voice crying in the wilderness and Jesus was and is the Messiah. John and Jesus both taught faith to those that came to them. By what authority gave them that was God. The same authority that commanded the religious leaders of Israel to teach repentance, forgiveness and faith.

To know there false teachers in the world today, that call men and woman to change, is only another key that is destroying people’s faith in God. The question was by whose authority did John baptized and whose authority did Jesus baptize. The teaching was in question. Whether it be of God or not. It is simple really to understand why the religious leaders might ask these questions, though Jesus refuses to answer them. After all those calling people to repent doing it in God’s name were only doing what the religious leaders of Israel was not doing to the outcast and down trodden of Israel. There call not to Israel but to all men and women of the world. Jesus came to go the to Gentiles like John because the religious leaders would not. For this very reason John authority to teach and preach was no more believed then Jesus. Yet both these men came from the religious leaders line.

Both sides of my family has religious leaders in them. Both were Baptist line. I claim no denomination. I claim like Jesus that my message is about God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit is for all. Though most churches today still reach out to the lost, I do not question this. I do not question that the church world is in love with reaching out to the lost. I do not question the authority in which they do these things if they are following God. The proof of whose disciple one is should be clearly seen. Yet sometimes a believer is in wolves clothing and other times they are wearing the wool of faith. Our garments should be kept spotless, but that Jesus and the Holy Spirit job to correct and to enable one to live for God.

Does one reject the power of God to change lives. Many groups today think it only takes discipline to change. There some truth in that, but what and whose authority will maintain that discipline and change in a person life. Though faith in Jesus the ability to maintain and remain in his grace comes only with the one’s own desire to serve and follow after Christ. To follow after the authority of God in their life. Others need the correction society to keep them inline. Causing nazism type of power to rise in the human race. If your discipline today is without Jesus at the helm, then you are following not Jesus but the ways of man to control one’s own destiny. Do you want God in control of your life? God is in control anyway, but to give him permission is to say Lord I can not do it on my own without your help, and this is not weak minded. Sooner or later we all need a little help from someone. Philippians says one can do all things through Christ Jesus. In truth with allowing God’s (Father, son and Holy Spirit) authority in one’s life one is able to rise above evil, but to use the authority of God to defeat it. Whose authority are you under.

Dear Heavenly Father thank you for your authority in the believers life to be overcomers and only needing you in our life. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
