Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Luke 5:17-26 KJV
(17) And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
(18) And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.
(19) And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.
(20) And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.
(21) And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
(22) But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?
(23) Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?
(24) But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.
(25) And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.
(26) And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.

The modern world will question any form of healing. Will question the ability to heal, especially when it comes to the emotion and spiritual aspects of healing. How easy it is for any minister to say repent and your sins will be forgiven, yet Jesus said your sins are forgiven without the word repent being used. God is the only one that knows the condition of the heart. Jesus said to the man your sins are forgiven.

What length would you go to have your sins forgiven. How many gifts would buy someone to try to get them to pardon you. Let alone how many people will take you to the altar of grace.. Had the man expect spiritual healing? In scripture it seems that these four friends went beyond their call of duty to get their friend to the seat of Christ. It takes a good friend to carry you, and a better friend to open up a roof and lower you down by ropes to be where one can be seen by Jesus because of the crowd. Then Jesus still had to take notice. Yet who would not notice someone being lowered down from the roof. It was known the power of God was upon Jesus and healing was taken place. The crowd understood not who Jesus was beyond the fact the power of healing was upon him. Yet who was this man that would say your sins are forgiven. Jesus meet opposition and his ability to forgive was in question. The man paralyzed lying on a cot, looking to Jesus for help, received first forgiveness of sin, but second he was healed and was able to pick up his mat and walk.

Jesus needed a sign before the religious leaders, of his power to forgive sin. Illness were often thought of as being the cause of sin. Yet had this man sin to cause him to be ill, no one knows but God. Was the man’s transgressions were cutting in front of the crowd seeking healing? Perhaps that would be the answer here. Jesus pardoning the man for him getting ahead of the crowd to be seen by Him. Yet Jesus found it easy to say your sins are forgiven. And to tell the man to get up and walk to demonstrate his authority despite how he came to be in front of the seat of Jesus.

Anyone coming to the altar of grace of God can find forgiveness of sin. Man often finds it hard to forgive each other of sin. Yet when it comes to God, his grace is sufficient for all our needs. God loved us that He sent his Son to die in our place, yet much more to teach us of his forgiveness and grace. Are you willing to bring your friends, your family and strangers to the throne of God, to the seat of Christ for healing and mercy. Are you willing to show that same mercy. Forgiveness for someone else begins when we see the depth of our own sin, or the compassion and love of Christ. We ourselves can only forgive completely when we received that same grace. God came to give us grace so we can show grace. Jesus was clear when a miracle came forth, when he was attacked by what authority he had to forgive. Jesus knew the love of His Father, yet he had to face death painfully knowing God’s grace. To demonstrate God’s grace it is going to hurt at times. The question is will your bring your friends to the altar of grace, by demonstrating forgiveness. Can you bring them to Jesus for healing. Jesus will do the rest. Jesus will bring healing to the sinner, and perhaps physical healing before they leave this earth. Yet whether healing of the physical kind comes, the healing of the soul is needed first. Man found first healing for his soul and then his body.

Dear Heavenly Father bring us to your throne of mercy and grace so that we can bring others too. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
