The Time of Christ: The Best For Last

John 2:1-11 KJV
(1) And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
(2) And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
(3) And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
(4) Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
(5) His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
(6) And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
(7) Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
(8) And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
(9) When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
(10) And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
(11) This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

This is Jesus’ first recorded miracle in the New Testament of the Bible. We have gone through most of the woman during Jesus ministry but it time to take note of his early ministry up till the time of opposition. Perhaps at this point it better to refresh that early in his ministry there was no opposition to what Jesus did or taught. In fact his first year of ministry lead right into a period of popularity because of his fame. Yet his first miracle done among his brethren was at a wedding feast. It seems like a trivial thing except he took plain water and turned it into wine. Jesus told his mother that his time was not yet come, this was speaking of His death when he poor out his blood for you and me. His blood symbolizing at the passover by the wine. Jesus through out his ministry would be water to the multitudes with water from heaven, the truth of God through parables would be shared so that people could understand God’s principles and commands. Miracles would be done to grab the people attention and to glorify God. It was more then a simple parlor trick but actual miracle. A healing that could not be so readily duplicated. The blind would see and the lame would walk. Demon possessed people would be set free. Yet this miracle worker would eventually hang on the cross, after being beaten, because of His claim as the Son of God, and equal to the Father, a threat to both to religious leaders and the government of the day. The people would declare him their king. The people would think he would take power, only for him be slained. His resurrection taking place on the third day.

Jesus told Mary from the very first miracle what was coming though perhaps she did not understand fully. She knew the Lamb of God had to suffer and die, but was she fully prepared for the moment at the wedding feast. I think not, but it was a subtle reminder to Mary of what laid ahead for her baby boy. All the miracles Jesus would do in his day would lead up to the greatest miracle and gift of love ever given to mankind and that was the gift of salvation and forgiveness for sin through the beating and crucifixion of Jesus, with victory won over death the punishment for sin, through His resurrection. The wine given last being the best served. Usually the worse given at the end of a party, because no one can remember what they were drinking. Jesus poured out the best for last on the cross and arose and walked on the earth forty more days before ascending up into glory before the disciples eyes.

The wedding planned and waiting for our Lords return when the wrath of God will be poured out on the world, and the protection of God over His people. The grapes are trampled and stored for the day of revenge. God’s people coming back with Jesus on the day of Judgment before the world and the rapture of the church. What a glorious day when Jesus calls to His bride, yet it is a day of gnashing of teeth and weeping for those that did not believe.

The wedding feast a great time of jubilee, but a reminder of what is yet to come. A wedding feast being first miracles publicly performed by Jesus that is recorded. A reminder of what will come to be in three years. Mary being prepared for the truth of those words of her Son Jesus.

Dear Heavenly Father the preparation of the day of Judgment can only mean for the lost to repent now while they can. We ask that you open every heart to hear, believe and receive Jesus Christ as payment for sin. That the world may know your love and mercy for them. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
