Matthew 20:20-29 KJV
(20) Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.
(21) And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.
(22) But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.
(23) And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
(24) And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.
(25) But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
(26) But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
(27) And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
(28) Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
(29) And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.

One little request about a seat on the left and right of Jesus in heaven. Yet it something to not that the mother of James and John of Bethany knew who Jesus was. In fact it says Mary of Bethany worship Jesus. Jesus did not rebuke her for worshipping Him. Yet He explained who was in charge in heaven. That the choice of show sat on his left and right was not his choice but His Father’s in heaven. At that moment Christ is demonstrated his own Servanthood to the Father. It might seem like a trivial thing, for it is said that Christ is equal to the Father. Yet even with this equality there is a peeking order of authority. The authority to worship Christ comes from the Father. His position came from God. Yet Jesus declares himself as one with the Father. His servanthood seen in his going forth from His Father as the word and in obedience to the Father. The Father does not obey the Son, except in the outline of what He decrees. It is like a menu, you have what is on the menu. If you order that which is on the menu that is what you get with no substitutions. Yet if you deviate from the menu you are not guaranteed the delicious food that ordering straight from the menu will provide or that substitution can be granted. If you follow God’s word down to the letter, you have not to worry about what you ask if it be of God or not. Jesus had no qualms in asking His Father what was rightfully His has His Son. Yet his position has Son came with the will of God for Him to lay down His life. His death was the cup that James and John would have to face one day. In fact these two would be martyr for their faith. In fact they would be beheaded.

The Father sits on the left side of Jesus. That position clear for the Son sits on the right hand side of the Father. Yet God’s Son is made lower then the angels and crowned with glory from heaven. Jesus came as servant in human flesh. To serve us, to teach us, and to remind us of who the Father is and love for mankind. By Christ obedience to God would get His seat back in the heaven. This position his from the beginning as the Word of God. Yet his form incorruptible and not of flesh in the human since but flesh in incorruptible form. A from undefiled by man. James and John were only human and yet their death would not allow them to necessarily have chief position beside Jesus. This position designed by God but not given to Christ to have authority to declare at the time in which He spoke to Mary of Bethany.

Mary of Bethany wanted the best for her sons. Perhaps thinking in line with the fact virgin Mary chief position for her Son was beside God in heaven. Yet it was not Mary mother of Jesus declaration that made Jesus who He was. In fact the Father declared who Jesus was not only from before birth, but through signs and wonders performed during Jesus’ walk on earth. God at Christ baptism declared Jesus as His Son in an audible voice. This position of Christ because of who He is as chief cornerstone of faith from the beginning of time as the Word of God, made Mary of Bethany only wanted the best for her sons, but even though they would drink the cup of their Lord, it did not mean they have a seat on the throne in heaven right beside Jesus. Yet we can rest assured of their authority in heaven as reigning with God as kings and his mother as a queen. For all of God’s children willl reign with Christ in thousand year reign on earth, as kings, and queens and priest and priestess.

Some of the disciples were angry with the request of Mary of Bethany, but Jesus rebuked them for explaining that all that wanted chief spot had to be a servant to all. And those that were least among them would be chief. David was a lowly shepherd boy, yet He became king. The gentiles tend to lord over Israel that they were in charge and exercised that authority so they would not forget that authority. Christ servanthood demonstrated to us not to use our authority as a means to be slave master, but a life of sacrifice. Our duty as believers is to take up our cross and follow in Christ footsteps.

Dear Heavenly Father give help us to take up our cross and follow Jesus as a servant of faith, not to Lord over but to exercise the authority given to each of your children as believers to ask and receive those things that are according to your will as we obey you, understanding all other things may not be on the menu and might not be granted. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
