Daily Devotions:by turtle30c

Luke 10:38-42 KJV
(38) Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
(39) And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
(40) But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
(41) And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
(42) But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

How wonderful it is to be able to sit and listen to God’s word. Just to take time to hear the word of God read, or spoken to the heart. If one chose to, they really could do it all day, if the time is available. Yet most people work, tend to children/elderly parents or have some other task that need doing, that time with God’s word is only for a few minutes each day if at all. I can not even began to tell you how easy it is to get side tracked in the course of studying God’s word. In fact if I can I like to be in a room where there is no noise, yet tonight I am reading in the living room with my husband watching some sport show. Fortunately he is eating a cookie. A cookie and not talking back to the tv, something men do watching sports, like the tv will answer. My God is more likely to answer if I started shouting, if by His Spirit alone. Speaking to the inward heart, through the precious word and His still small voice.

Some people will argue that I look as foolish praising God as my husband looks at shouting at the tv. That person would probably argue that either of us will not get a response from the tv, or God. Yet I know my Savior lives within my heart and I believe I will, Mary sat and listen to her Lord. Wanting direction when work was needed doing. I agree sometimes work is needed, before anything else, but Jesus was not upset only Martha, who was concerned about many things and just used Mary as excuse for her attitude and request to Jesus.

Martha a woman troubled needing to take care of her own needs, instead of taking time and sitting at her Lord’s feet as Mary did she found herself in need. Instead of casting all her worries at the feet of Jesus she begged for assistance. Yet no assistance would be provided, because Martha chose to tend to the work and not her own soul. Martha had taken on the task of waiting on those in her home. She had taken time to check on the meal, she become over work and tired, thinking on her own problems and cares instead concentrating on everything else and felt overwhelmed. I do not doubt the task at hand perhaps seemed over whelming for Martha, but apparently it was nothing Martha could not handle.

Jesus told Martha to leave Mary alone for she had chosen to listen at Jesus feet. Are you going to do the most important thing and listen and then obey Christ. Martha was obeying, but not so much listening. Instead of praying she was complaining. How hard it is to listen, but if we just take time to pray, we realize God knows what He is doing know matter what happens.

Dear Heavenly Father give us grace to learn to listen to you and sit and hear what you speak to our hearts instead of worrying about the cares of this world, remember you are in control. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
