Come And Lay Hands

(23) And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.
(24) And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.

Mark 5:35-43 KJV
(35) While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?
(36) As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.
(37) And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.
(38) And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.
(39) And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.
(40) And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.
(41) And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.
(42) And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.
(43) And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.

The power of healing is often done by Christ by the laying on of hands through out scripture and this is perhaps why some ministers even still lay hands on the sick when they pray following in the footsteps of Jesus. The miracle spoke of yesterday of the woman issue of blood happened between the call and the actual miracle of this little girl of age twelve. Yet that woman with the issue was the one grabbing hold and today message Jesus is laying hands for healing. If you ever been prayed for you know that it is a simple matter of just someone reaching over either holding your hand, or placing there hand on a safe zone on the human body and being prayed for. It is when a minister wants to press upon or shove you to the floor is when most have a problem. Some people will even claim that is the power of God, but most will say they know the difference between the shove of God and the shove of a human being. I have never thought of Christ touch being forceful, when it came to reaching out to perform His miracles, yet there was occasion like when Judas kissed him that that the soldiers fell backwards with force and probably not even with a touch of the hand of Christ but the power of the Holy Spirit demonstrating His power in the situation fixing to happen in Christ crucifixion. Yet in this case of healing of the little girl, the girl was found dead upon the arrival of Jesus. The miracle worker was not to late, because we know how the story ends, Jesus was right on time.

Jesus took John and Peter and the mother and father of the little girl into the room to raise the little girl back to life. The father was a ruler in the synagogue of the town. He knew the authority of God, yet when he heard is daughter was dead he stop in faith for a moment, and Jesus spoke quickly and said be not afraid but believe. The laying on of hands seem pointless at the moment for the ruler, yet perhaps he was one that believed in the future resurrection to come. Not all believed the resurrection was possible and yet other groups believe it was possible. It was a religious controversy of the day and time.

Be Not afraid just believe seem pointless when someone is dead. It seems impossible. I have heard stories over the years of ministers locking themselves in the room of a deceased and praying for dead to come back to life and the dead rising. Yet all I can think faith was needed at that moment to see their dead brought back. It is not the norm and some would say the minister was maybe to over come with grief to know better, yet the miracle of faith occurred and the dead lived again. Yet most would agree that having seen the miracles this is not the norm. Something else had to be happening for this miracle to have taken place in the life of that minister in ministry for God to allow him or her to see a resurrection. A resurrection is not normal miracle of the everyday kind. It is not the norm, for the time of Christ, and yet even Elijah prayed for the dead to rise when he prayed for the Shunammite woman’s son who was brought back to life.

A resurrection to strengthen faith of the synagogue ruler. A miracle of a resurrection to strengthen perhaps those of faith. It would be a miracle that Jesus order to keep quiet that perhaps would not be kept so easily quiet. Yet perhaps it happened for this family and village to help them believe when Jesus arose from the grave. Maybe the resurrection was to help the ruler to be reminded of the prophesy of Elijah return, for him to understand fully who Jesus was. Yet scripture does say why this resurrection happened, and that was to believe. It was a resurrection that came to produce hope. For Jesus had said be not afraid but believe.

The daughter asleep but not dead, meaning she was resting in the arms of God and would be wakened. She was twelve years old a young girl that was now considered an adult by Jewish tradition. Yet she was told to rise from the state of being dead. Jesus took her by the hand and said arise and the young woman sat up. Jesus order that someone bring her something to eat. Jesus order also no one to tell what happened.

It is not that the story of the miracle was not true that the story would remain hidden for a time, but because of the stir this would cause. Rising from death was not the everyday occurrence. Yet the resurrection of the dead was coming. This girl was probably one of the first resurrected in Jesus’ ministry. Yet the only girl that was resurrected. How fitting a girl be risen first, instead of a man in Christ ministry. A woman at the well in John 4 was first of her village to believe, and evangelize. The women were told first of the coming Messiah, before the men. The women were first at the tomb of our Savior and found the grave empty. So why not a woman first to be risen from the dead.

This miracle clearly done to promote faith in God. Clearly done to signify who Jesus is. Clearly done to testify to the women even though more men were present at the miracle. And it was clearly seen by those in leadership but was told to keep quiet. John and Peter were head disciples, and often were seen observing miracles and wonders no one else was privilege to see, including the transfiguration of Jesus on the mountain. Where Moses appeared along with Elijah talking to Jesus. The resurrection brought about to produce faith beyond the tomb. Peter would be the first man to see the empty tomb. He would need these miracles of the possible of a resurrection of Jesus to believe especially with rumors of it did not occur. Perhaps they are recorded to help us to believe.

The synagogue ruler needed faith in the here after and it was given. The miracle already believed was possible, but the final miracle yet fully realized as the little girl sat up. Jesus left no doubt with that synagogue ruler of who He was that day as the Son of God. Do you believe in the resurrection. Do you believe that you will go to heaven when you die, and not just be dead and buried as a believer?. Do you believe eternal life is real and not just something that is talked about among religious people?

Dear Heavenly Father give us the belief in the here after so that our walk holds the promise of hope. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
