He Taught Them

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Mark 2:13-14 KJV
13 And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.
14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.

Can you follow Jesus without being taught about Jesus, either by the Holy Spirit, by a physical teacher, or opening the Bible? At some point those needing a human teacher, will begin to learn scripture on their own and by the Holy Spirit if they are a believer in Christ. I stop to grasp one important thing, Jesus took time to teach on the earth about the Kingdom heaven, about how we should live, and about following Him. He was not weak in what he taught but taught with authority that those that listen were even filled with question. We need not fear to pray an ask God questions about his word and about those things in scripture that we do not grasp because of ancient tradition. God in his wisdom gave man instruction to provide books, dictionaries, commentaries, and many help tools for studying scripture for modern times. Not all information is accurate and some is vague. Yet it will help a person to understanding scripture, if they use tools and seek answers to question that arise. Now anything taught by God's Spirit without scripture in front of you, better pay close attention and heed any warnings from God's Spirit, even if it sounds silly at first. God wants to speak to the heart of man about who he is and demonstrate who he is. In chapter 2:13 of Mark it says Christ taught them, and the next verse it says he called Levi sitting at receipt of customs and said "follow me". When you enter a city especially on coastline ther was a place to enter and be taxes, as well as show trade goods, before entering the city. This is where Levi(Matthew) is sitting when Jesus calls him to be disciple. This man had knowledge of other languages possibly for he have to know some languages of people that came to the gate that were foreign traders.

There is a point Jesus need no interpretor or explanation of another language because of who he is, but those that would teach after him would need knowledge of other languages. It important point of why Matthew may of been called. We may follow Chrsit with no particular skills and he gives us skills to use, or we maybe laden with skills and tools that is useful to the work of God. First thing Jesus wants us to do is learn who He is, the second is to follow him, and use our skills that we are blessed with and those skills he going to provide for us to have for the work of the ministry. Now why so much detail into Matthew skills, it is a skill that would be used on the day of Pentecost perhaps when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the disciples, skills of men that people thought Jesus only called a bunch of uneducated men to his work. It is further from the truth. He calls all types of people to his work. Just because you know not about Jesus does not mean you can not learn about Jesus and his teaching, you maybe most educated man and know nothing about Jesus and his teachings, that okay, today is the day to begin to understand Jesus wants to teach you about Himself.

To follow means we have to learn something to do what Jesus did. Okay if i follow my husband footsteps in the snow to avoid stomping my own path in the snow, i find his feet to big for my feet to fit in. Jesus feet will always be to big for you to fill, but it does not mean, you can not put your feet in his footprints and follow him. Follow his pathway to the resurrection examining what he taught. Know his ministry was more then just about repentance and the cross, but teaching the people who God the Father is and the Holy Spirit. Jesus is going to be your trainer, though you taught by your teacher or through just reading scripture. There things Jesus will stress to you that you might understand until later why. Then he going to confirm what he teaches you and then make sure you are following it his way.

Study scripture, listen to what Jesus taught, learn from him about following him. You follow your human teacher, they will fail, so will your pastor, but Jesus will never fail. His word is true, and his ways are still good for today. First thing we need to do is learn to listen to Jesus words in scripture. And not just the red letter words as some Bible are marked. But surrounding black letter words that tell the surrounding and the reason for Christ words. if you want to be a follower you have to learn to listen to his voice and his call in your life and your life alone. Your call maybe be different then someone else. If you fail to follow Jesus and his word then you not following in his big footprints, you following the ways of the devil.

Dear Heavenly Father, help us to follow you as the people did in your ministry to hear you teach and not just to see the wonderworking of miracles. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
