A Loud Voice 12/09/2020
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisLuke 1:39-56 KJV
39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45 And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
Elizabeth knowledge of the child Mary was carrying came from the Lord. Had you wonder how did Elizabeth know Mary was pregnant as she enter her house. How did she know that at Mary voice her baby leaped in her womb and she was filled with the Holy Ghost/Spirit. A woman filled with the Holy Spirit. We do not find this talked about much in Old Testament. Moses sister Marian and I sure of maybe a few more mentioned. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, usually talked about in the gender or group of men and not the women in scripture. Women yes you can be filled by God's Spirit and are upon the day of your salvation as God's seals you with his Spirit to mark you as his child. As a child of God, you can also pray for the infilling of the Holy Spirit as well for the work of God to be done in your life and life of others. Laying on of hands is not just for the men. That is the mistake that perhaps it is not taught. Perhaps because we live in a world that men and women really are not as segregated in thinking in regards to groups, to working side by side with each other within the church realm. It is never question if a woman can be filled with the Holy Spirit. I never heard it question in that regard. I thinking on Elizabeth experience of bringing forth praises of the Lord and the prophesying to Mary of her coming baby being Her Lord. Stop Elizabeth called Mary baby Lord. First to declaration beside the angel Gabriel that that baby was Lord.
When was Jesus known to be Lord publicly not until maybe after the crucifixion, but some spoke Jesus as being Lord by the Spirit long before the crucifixion, even before his birth in human life. As Elizabeth spoke Mary knew in her heart that was spoken to her only confirmed what the angel had spoken to her. This young woman begains to rejoice and magnify the Lord because of what was told her was of God. She rejoiced in the fact that God spoke to the seed of Abraham in verse 55. Mary is speaking that God speaks to all children of Israel both male and female. Because of the role of prophets, we often do not see God speaking to women. Angel spoke to Samson's mother. Priest spoke to Hannah and so forth. We see often the male dominant role in scripture, but not the part of God speaking to the woman. God spoke to all Abraham descendants both male and female. Elizabeth spoke with a loud voice what God had spoken to her about concern her Lord's mother to be and as she shared it only brought more praising from the mother of Her Lord, because the truth was confirmed in her Spirit of divine prophesy of the coming Messiah. Mary was thought to be young and in her teens, but no matter her age, no doubt she was frighten and scared but with confirmation she needed not to fear, but rejoice in knowing her cousin was a witness of the truth of God's blessing in her life. It was not just a fantasy in her mind, but a reality that she was virgin fixing to have a baby in time to come.
Where are you this morning all this is hearsay in scripture. I think your view is based on your beliefs at the moment if you believe God can do anything, or whether or not you can conceive God's ability to speak to his people of any gender. Mary stay with Elizabeth perhaps til the baby was born or left right before, not sure, scripture is vague. Yet we know God left the confirmation in the heart of Mary of the truth of her own pregnancy. There was no longer any doubt if there was ever any doubt. Some people talk all God speaks and grabs hold, others are willing to grab hold with some doubt still in tow, not wanting to be blindsided by fakery, and then there those that doubt and faith is never really there, even with evidence. What evidence did Mary and Elizabeth have they both were with child. Both were expecting. Both probably taking time together to create clothes for their infants in the three months time they had together. No doubt Elizabeth told Mary everything she thought as a woman she might want to know about child bearing, I don't doubt Elizabeth maybe had even witness child birth, though never having a child of her own. The joy the fear of motherhood all in rich with the knowledge of how special each child was. That John the Baptist would preach and prepare the way for the Messiah who was to be born by Mary. The talk the discussion and perhaps even the hopes spoken of the future of what it all might mean.
