Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Luke 1:23-38 KJV
23 And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.
38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

Conception is just plain hard for some women and for others they are as fertile to the point you wonder how many children will they have, and how come they are so blessed when others are not. To be blessed as a Virgin would take an act of God, to be blessed in Old Age past your years of being able to conceive, and both woman were cousin and lived in different towns and both had a miracle conceptions. No where but at the time of Sarah is there ever talked of a woman in old age having a baby until the time of Elizabeth. Mysterous births did occur in regards to woman not thinking they could conceive and finally did after God blessed them, like Hannah conceiving Samuel only to have more children after dedicating Samuel to the Lord. Samson was a birth that came with angelic message as well, that he be raised as a Nazarite. That his hair was not to be cut. Jesus himself would be called a Nazerene.

I can almost imagine the people's amazement when these two woman conceived, and one by the Holy Spirit. There would of been much talk, especially the Virgin conception. Mary may of had to go through a Jewish ritual because of the conception to see if she had cheated on Joseph, or was pregnant by rape or some other way. Though scripture does not speak of any trouble or tribulation Mary may of had difficulties with religious leaders after her conception, we can only imagine, that with talk came questions to the religious order and religious laws may of been inacted to find out the truth of the matter. Yet Elizabeth conception of her child would of been a welcome conception, and much wanted pregnancy by Elizabeth even in old age, for the woman mocked her for not having a child. Yet now the woman rejoiced wth her because she conceived.

The Angel Gabriel went to see Mary and spoke this mystery to her, and told her she was highly favored and that Lord was with her. She was blessed among women. That she would conceive in her womb and name the baby Jesus. Her first question not tempting God but a question for information to how will this be, because she knew no man intimately. The Holy Ghost shall come upon theee and the power of the Highest shall overshadow her and this Holy thing which shall be born will be called the Son of God. Now realize the Spirit of God cover Mary and it was through his power that she conceived. Power his word, his decree that she became pregnant. God said let there be light in the beginning of creation and there was light. It was by God's word and power. Mary was willing and told the angel let it be according to his word. She accepted it exactly what was said to her.

Now I not sure how many of us would today believe such a story if it happened in modern times. Yet when it comes to men and woman concerning sex nothing changed in billions of years, only faith of the impossibility. This is apart of story that must me taken on faith, though it was prophecied in Isaiah 7. It is something that must be understood as divine providence. It is belief that God ability is sovereign and governs our world, and his power and ability is greater then our own. One ought to come to terms our ability is not God's ability. If he created, he can control it. Man however can not control all he creates whether good or bad. Man just thinks he can control anything he makes.

When we see the sovereignty of God's ability we can see his ability to have a virgin become pregnant and a woman past her years of conception conceive a child. We can acknowldge all things are possible for God. To acknowledge God's divine ability takes faith. How much faith do you have this morning, can you take it on faith that God's power conceived a baby in a Virgin, his Son. Can you accept on faith the forerunner John the Baptist would be conceived by his mother in old age. The Christmas story takes faith. Yet recognizing God's power is part of the battle we human's have when it comes to divine providence.

Dear Heavenly Father, help us to have faith in what we can not fully grasp and yet we receive it on faith, not of our power but the power of the Holy Spirit in the lives of individuals. Help us to realize everything you governor is in your control and all things are possible. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
