Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Matthew 2:14-23
(14) When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
(15) And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
(16) Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.
(17) Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,
(18) In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
(19) But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
(20) Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child's life.
(21) And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
(22) But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:
(23) And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

Because of decree of King Herod to kill the babies of 2 years old and younger, Rachel the wife of Israel/Jacob was said to be weeping. Meaning the house of Israel. For these children were killed not just in Bethlehem but surrounding areas. What a harsh decree for a king who was mocked by wise men and not Israel. King Herod did not punish the right people. Yet it was prophesied by Israel’s Prophet Jeremiah. Yet this event had happened once before at the time of Moses. For Moses was saved by the King’s daughter when she found him while bathing in a little basket made of bulrushes. Prophesy repeating for a purpose to bring in the prophet of the Gentiles, who was the Messiah. A Prophet of the world and not only prophet but Savior and Lord. He would follow the steps of Moses back from Egypt where he went to hide from King Herod after Joseph was warned in a dream to take the child to Egypt, and now once in Egypt God spoke in a dream once more to bring Jesus back to the homeland of Israel. Joseph and Mary went home to Galilee and lived in Nazareth so Jesus would be called a Nazarene as scripture dictated. God’s prophesy known, or God’s prophesy revealed. Only God knows how much was His Spirit and how much was foreknowledge by Joseph and Mary. Yet the coming of the prophesy by the star, by weeping of women of Israel and more is not proof enough to you that Jesus is the Messiah you might as well forget this last one concerning his childhood. Yet if you can grasp the prophesy of scripture from Isaiah and so forth this final prophesy is only add meat of knowledge. God gives knowledge and wisdom of discernment of prophesy. If the heart of this passage is not enough for you to weep, then remember more would die because of Jesus. Many died and die daily both young and old to protect the Gospel story. Let us hold to a story worth standing up for. For Jesus came not to harm with weapons of physical war, but spiritual war. Warrior against evil and unjust ways of man. To love and show compassion instead of hate. Hate easier to show at times, then love, yet love must go forward.

Dear Heavenly Father thank you for grace and compassion to show us proof in scripture of your promises to fulfill the Messiah/Jesus coming. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
