Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Luke 2:8-20 KJV
(8) And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
(9) And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
(10) And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
(11) For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
(12) And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
(13) And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
(14) Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
(15) And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
(16) And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
(17) And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
(18) And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
(19) But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
(20) And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

The shepherds are in the field, the pastors of today are definitely in the field of ministry of God’s heritage along with other that adhere to the call God has on their life. God’s heritage is watching and waiting for the coming of the Messiah once again. They wait in the field that they are working in. Whether it be a nursing home ministry, street ministry, work ministry, online ministry, pulpit ministry, music ministry and so forth, there are people attending to both potential sheep and God’s sheep. Yet one day those shepherds are going to hear the trumpet sound and guess what they will no longer be in the world as we know it today. These ministers are waiting for Messiah return and waiting for the trumpet to sound so they will be taken to be with the Lord at his appearing in the sky. Nothing going to stop those shepherds from leaving this earth to go be with their Lord. Yet while they wait they are abiding in field of God’s calling on their life. Important to not they are abiding. Continuing on in that field patiently waiting.

As we celebrate the birth of our Savior let us remember the shepherds on that first Christmas morning that heard that their Savior had been born. How long they had waited in the field doing the work of man tending to their sheep and retelling of the shepherd kings of Judah and how one day one would come to rule the world. As shepherds abided in the field an angel appeared. This startled those shepherd and they were afraid, but they were told not to fear for he came in peace to tell of the Savior birth. That their Messiah had been born. Their would be a sign. A sign meaning evidence of what the angel said was true they find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in a manger. Then more angels joined the first and began to sing a glorious song disappearing into the night. Shepherd made haste and found that the story the angels told was true about baby Jesus.

The shepherds could not contain the story in their heart but began to spread it everywhere that the Christ child had been born and was in a manger bed. The shepherds today abiding over Christ flock have never been able to contain the story of not only the birth of Jesus but the coming of Christ. Two times a year the message is preached both of His birth and the cross to the world. Yet the world only hears the Sleigh bells of dashing through the snow on a one horse open sleigh and the bunny trail hippity hop hop Easter on its way. How the carolers use to sing the glorious Christmas songs, and the people would know the carol songs. Yet today does the world remember Joy to the world the Lord has come, or Come all ye faithful. These songs only sung once a year, but many still can remember a few lines if not the whole song from singing them in church. Yet the world only years the songs if a song is requested on the radio, or heard over the store speaker. Maybe the movies across our tv that reminds of Christmas is enough, yet even many of those stories leave Christ out.

Where is the Christ child but hopefully etched in our hearts, cried by the minister from their pulpits. As the world listen are they missing the songs, or only happy when the Christmas hubbub is gone. Whatever the case it up to each believer to remember the Christmas message and to go tell it over the hills and everywhere, as the shepherds did that first Christmas morn. Let us not be idle but be like the shepherds of that first Christmas until the trumpet sounds.

Dear Heavenly Father may your message of Christ birth spread far and wide, telling the hope of eternal life. Give us the hope of forgiveness and faith. Remind us to spread the gospel of faith. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
