|Time Of Christ: Setting A Watch
Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris
Interesting thing the need for watchers from the government. What were they really watching for was the hopes to prove a hoax, or thievery of the disciples. Yet Jesus set a watch in the garden, because his hour of persecution drew near. Did Roman government believe in the possible resurrection. One must remember the religion of Rome. Rome had no trouble believing that a god could walk among the people. Most mythology talks of this sort of thing. Most Roman mythology deals with sex with their gods and goddess as well, so the belief of the virgin birth of Jesus would not seem probable, but not impossible. Israel had watch from the time of prophesy for the virgin birth. The virgin birth would take and act of God. One of the religious leaders of the trial in Luke mentions Jesus mother being blessed. In reference to the being the one chosen by God to carry a child of virgin birth, yet that would not stop the priesthood from seeking to have Jesus crucified.
Jesus need not a watch or someone to tell him when the soldiers were coming but it was for the disciples benefit and the need of their protection to come. If you are with Jesus do you need a physical watchman for protection. If you believe Jesus is in control and still on the throne then why do you need a watchman. It is for the need of the unbeliever. Roman government did not believe Jesus would come back to life and neither did some of the Jews. Yet the fact there was skeptics before the resurrection tells me that some seen and new the miracles were true. The evidence before Christ death out weighed common sense of a resurrection. Had they really look at all the angles of crucifying Christ is a real mystery. For the fear of Jesus was He come back to life even by the government. They did not want uprising because of lies told of resurrection. Without the resurrection there is no hope of victory over the grave. Once you are dead you would be dead and the common idea of heaven and hell would no longer be necessary.
The reality of the resurrection would come to light on Easter morning/Resurrection Day. Meantime people were watching and waiting. As a believer we wait and watch for the return of Christ not in the grave, but coming down from heaven with the people of faith coming with him to get the saints to meet Him in the air. Some watch with believing and others watch with skepticism. Some people think it foolish to believe and others believe knowing that Godís word never fails. Roman government had enough evidence that said that Jesus was who he said he was and is. Yet to think for a moment can resurrection take place? Jesus would be two days dead when He would rise again on the third day. The point being there were enough skeptics probably most likely because of the healing Jesus did. For Jesus healed family members of the government, as well as servants of Rome. The skeptics among the Jews would have been the Pharisees but the Sadducees did not believe in the resurrection. A stone was placed over the tomb that it took more then one person to move. The watch over the tomb would be the soldiers, to make sure nothing happened. They would need proof either way. Jews could not watch because of the Sabbath. Yet preparation were in their thoughts of what need to be done for proper burial. Tomorrow we pick up the story where we leave it again today with Jesus still in the tomb. Yet those that know the story know Christ is risen. The watch is for unbeliever, for the believer we just keep pressing forward.
Dear Heavenly Father help us to press forward in faith knowing Jesus will return to take His people home. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
