The Last Week Before The Crucifixion:The Cup of Betrayal

Mark 14:17-26 KJV
(17) And in the evening he cometh with the twelve.
(18) And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me.
(19) And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I?
(20) And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish.
(21) The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born.
(22) And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake it, and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body.
(23) And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them: and they all drank of it.
(24) And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.
(25) Verily I say unto you, I will drink no more of the fruit of the vine, until that day that I drink it new in the kingdom of God.
(26) And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the mount of Olives.

The cup of betrayal was already assigned to Judas. It was a task of ordination, not a task because of greed. A task because Judas desire silver more then his friendship with Jesus. With the betrayal came the guilt that could not be changed by the seeking of men, but only the seeking of God. Judas chose to seek the Priest instead of God and thus he would hang himself and as some Gospel report his body split in half in a field.

Judas path began before the last supper with Jesus. It began with going to the Priest and asking for money to betray Jesus location, so they could seize him. The agreement was thirty pieces of silver. Judas came from meeting with the Priest and perhaps spent the day with the disciples and Jesus. Perhaps even wondering when he should do it. At the supper hour Judas sat at the table when Satan enter him to do the task needed for the betrayal. Judas was marked by act of customs of friendship. The dipping of the wine into the bread. Judas reach over with a piece of bread and the rest watched as he sopped the bread in the wine. Judas gets up and goes out the door.

Jesus speaks and says it would it would have been better if Judas had never been born. Do we betray Christ with our actions. Do we betray Christ by our words. Do we betray Christ in ignorance, because of our lust for sin. If it was not for that fact that God’s redeeming power came through faith, we all be guilty of betrayal because of sin. Sin betrays who child we really are. It is a testimony against God and His Son. Yet Judas found no mercy, yet the children of God do. They found the advocator through Christ Jesus, the redeemer of their soul. Jesus knew the temptation to sin was great, though he never sinned against God. However His disciples picked corn on the Sabbath and He healed on the Sabbath which was consider a sin by the religious leaders. Yet these things were rebuked and rebuttal. Christ would not defend himself in a court of law, because to do so would be to purge himself of who He was as King and Lord of all.

No doubt Jesus telling his disciples who the betrayer was would not help Judas’ cause. No one tried to stop Judas the night, perhaps not understanding the words of Jesus. Let us strive to lay sin aside. And work on following Jesus. Let us work on living a life of love and forgiveness, knowing we have an intercessor for our sins to God.

Dear Heavenly Father give us grace in the hour of sin. Give us grace as we kneel in repentance, and enable us not to betray you again. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
