Old Paths

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Jeremiah 6:16 KJV
16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

To follow the old roads is not in opposition to follow Christ. The law only kept people from crossing over others rights. It also was outward show of faith through obedience to the law, but it did not mean one believed in God or ever believed in God's word. Jeremiah encouraged people to ask for the old road of faith, and the people reply was they would not.

When Christ died for us, did that change the old path of faith. In Proverbs 12:28 it said the righteousness is life and the pathway thereof, there is no death. Did anything change from Old to New Testament concerning the old roads. If I go into a cave with a headlight on my head to light my pathway, I will be traveling through old cavaran with a road map hopefully, the way out is already known and the knowledge of where the opening is of the cave, or the exit. It is that way in faith. Faith from Old to New did not change. We still must believe God at his word. One in the New Testament we must believe God loved us and sent his Son to die for our sins. God word has always died for our sins. Moses broke the stone tablets with the ten commandments thus destroying the laws of God that always would exist without the knowledge of man. The law of God did not change with the breaking of the ten commandments, it just made man ignorant of it. Moses had seen the law do not kill and killed and order the killing. God would spare Moses by only not allowing him into the promise land of Israel or to see his face again, but Moses still got to see the eternal home of heaven. The price of disobeying God, not the price of eternal life with God. God teaching Moses his price to have to abandon his family once reaching the road to the promise land. Moses knew he could enter not, but his repentance would bring him into his eternal home by faith.

Christ is the word of God that became flesh, that we believe, we see and are redeemed by. Christ being God's word in the flesh to demonstrate how to obey the laws of God by faith. To walk the old roads to believe in God was righteous. Faith through his Son and obedience to his word brought eternal life. The obedience to the word was not essential for salvation but faith was. Faith entails obeying the word of God because his ways are righteous. To follow the old road, by believing and not disobeying God and saying we are not to go that way, because it is out of the equation except in children of disobedience.

What changed was the format in which the word came to us. It came in human form. John 1:1-14. God's word with us(Immanuel/Emmanuel) and God with us. God's word fulfilled with Christ coming and his word fullfilled with his crucifixion and resurrection. Our faith continuing. There was no more need for sacrifice with Christ crucifixion, who died for our sins, if we would only believe in him. Believe in God because he loved us and sent his Son to be meditator for us.

Faith being built on God's love for us through his Son. Taking the old roads are not so bad when you understand what the old roads were about. Obedience to God's words yes, but first believing in God who could save you from his wrath to come on children of disobedience.

Dear Heavenly Father, help us to follow the old roads of faith in you first, and the fulliment of the prophecy of your Son, who through faith in him we would inherit eternal life. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
