Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

John 16:1-33 KJV
1 These things have I spoken unto you, that ye should not be offended.
2 They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.
3 And these things will they do unto you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.
4 But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.
5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
16 A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go to the Father.
17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves, What is this that he saith unto us, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me: and, Because I go to the Father?
18 They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.
19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him, and said unto them, Do ye enquire among yourselves of that I said, A little while, and ye shall not see me: and again, a little while, and ye shall see me?
20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy.
21 A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.
22 And ye now therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you.
23 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you.
24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
25 These things have I spoken unto you in proverbs: but the time cometh, when I shall no more speak unto you in proverbs, but I shall shew you plainly of the Father.
26 At that day ye shall ask in my name: and I say not unto you, that I will pray the Father for you:
27 For the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came out from God.
28 I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.
29 His disciples said unto him, Lo, now speakest thou plainly, and speakest no proverb.
30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things, and needest not that any man should ask thee: by this we believe that thou camest forth from God.
31 Jesus answered them, Do ye now believe?
32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.
33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

We live in a time that the Holy Spirit is still moving and working in our nation, and individual lives. When Jesus was among his disciples, the Holy Spirit still spoke to the believers heart. I have to wonder was he only speaking to the select disciples the answer is yes. Then why the explanation if God was speaking to the believers heart at this time. If you pick up your Bible and get saved by reading it, with no one explaining it to you personally beyond God's Spirit you will be taught about the gift of prophesy and the Holy Spirit maybe more so in this chapter then any other chapter, Christ is being prophetic here in this chapter. Christ is ministering to his disciples about the things to come and preparing them for the things to come. He is preparing them for the Comforter(Holy Spirit) coming and then he preparing them for persecution. What he is teaching is about how the Holy Spirit will be with you during these things that will come to pass. However for the Holy Spirit to manifest in your life fully, Jesus would have to leave. Is there a difference in when the Holy Spirit spoke in (Matthew 16:16-17) to Peter that Jesus was the Christ and the baptism(infilling) of the Holy Spirit? In Matthew 16 we see Peter declaring that Jesus is the Christ and Christ confirming the Father was the one that told him. I seen that confirmation in a church once, and felt it was unnecesary at the time, because it seemed to quenched the Spirit. I wonder why? Why would God quench the Spirit instead of building up God's people. Then I realize something there was more then one unbeliever in the house of God. Can the doubters quench the presence of God the answer is no, but God's Spirit maybe teaching you something about his presence in the life of the saints and unbeliever. Difference between corporate worship and individual faith and the Spirit of God making himself known to the unbeliever or believer still learning about his faith. It is not that God left you, it was warning that unbelievers were observing and individual was experience something without their understanding. No one else echoed Peter's words of who they thought Jesus was. One can be filled with God's Spirit and have the outpouring of God's Spirit and onlookers be like what happening, what is going on. Jesus verbalized it. Here in this chapter Jesus is verbalizing not only prophesy of what will be and what wil come, but also about what the comforter will do when he comes. He comes to judge the earth.

The verbalization of teaching to explain something either lands on deaf ears, half understanding ears, or fully intuned/understanding ears. Judas was not present to this conversation. This is before the garden where Christ prayed his second to his last prayer. His last prayer was before he died on the cross, when he spoke to His Father to forgive them. He is preparing the disciples for the infilling of the Holy Spirit because he would not be there to help them on the day of Pentecoste in the flesh. God puts his Spirit upon the believer to enable them to do the work he has called them too. Even speaking in a language others understand but not everyone understands that language. Someone does. Visible sign of the Holy Spirit was the Holy Spirit using the disciple to minister to someone else in a way needed, from wonders and signs to miracle, to language barrier being broken, to the gifts of the Spirit being demonstrated for the work of the ministry of God. Now when the Spirit comes into your life it first comes to convict the heart of man, and second prepare him for ministry thru his Spirit. One can be ministering without understanding of the Holy Spirit. Yet to be able to teach about it one needs to learn about the Holy Spirit and His purpose in one life.

There many things I can teach you about God, his Son and His Spirit, but there something you need to experience yourself as a believer, and unbeliever can not experience God's Spirit without first feeling convicted for salvation. That is the first work of God's Spirit does in a unbeliever to believer life. Abilemech in scripture got his first taste of the Holy Spirit when he took Abraham's wife. Holy Spirit stopped him from sinning. Was he a believer in God. He was a believer in many gods. Why is it important to not believe in other gods and only be sold out on God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, because two things, he will teach you all truths, He will be a comforter, and He will prophecy to your heart about things to come.

The only way to understand about the Holy Spirit in your daily life is ask God to speak to your heart, to teach you how to lead people to Christ, to yield to his will in your life. That is not about running pews, jumping hurdles, or falling on the floor face up or face down. It not about speaking in a language no one else understands unless to God privately in language He already knows, but speaking so you are understood to onlookers, and work you do for God is clearly seen as a work of God and not a work of man.

One more thought on this chapter is it speaks something that was prophetic at the time of disciples with little understanding. Yet after Christ death and resurrection they would fully understand parts of it and as time past, they would understand all Christ said. This chapter is still that way for the believer. There some it not understood the first time reading but as time goes by you understand more and more. Actually the whole Bible is that way concerning prophetic events. Keep reading, even if you do not read my devotion, keep reading your Bible, seek God and Christ. Be filled with God's Spirit as in the days of Pentecoste and listen to the Spirit of God in your heart.

Dear Heavenly Father, you are the great I am, you are the teacher of our soul by your Spirit. Our journey with you is a blessing because of your comfort, and your manifestation of your will in our life as ministers of the cross of Jesus. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

P.S. For those that use the Dailies Calendar it is fixed, days were out of alignment.
