18 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.
19 And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.
20 And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.
21 And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was. I mention yesterday the burning bush of Moses, but now we going to look at the attention getter of demonstration of God through thunder, lightening, trumpets , smoking mountain and fear of the people. This all takes place after the reading of the Ten Commandments. God desire to provoke fear into the people so they will not sin against him. Does fear prevent Israel from sinning probably for a time. Well the people decided when God tried to set them in a mindset of fear, that perhaps it be better if Moses only speak to him. That Moses be their intercessor. Moses becomes a type of mediator between God and the Israelites, which is a heavy burden to lead the people and to also at times even judge the people if God's wrath against the people did not destroy some of them first.
This is where some loose the idea of God, because it sound primitive in nature not something that belongs in the modern history some how. We are taught about the love of God and our mediator being Jesus the only mediator we need. That we are to walk in love and not fear of God and we also not to sin, because Christ already paid for our sins.
The world as gone so far to destroy the idea of ear of God based on movies showing primitive tribes in fear of natural events in time. Fear of God only comes in the idea of sudden deaths, sudden destruction, or things coming we can not control, but we know God can. God wants us to have enough fear of him, that we follow his ways, his path of righteousness. Parents sometimes causes children that much fear that their rules are obeyed in their house. Yet does fear make us less sinful, the answer in this day an time probably not. If you ever experienced prophet weather predictions, storms, flooding, and so forth in your day, things that could not be duplicated by a weather man, you might remain in fear if it brings a certain amount of devastation. There are things that make us fearful like rapist, gunman, deadly disease, fire and flooding being loose on the streets to do whatever they or it wants. Yet do we fear God?
If we see God only as a God of love we have no reason to fear him, but fear comes from the knowledge he will correct us if we sin, and yet that fear does not always scare us either. If we not scared of God will it cause us to sin more. The answers lies if we obey God because we love him then the presense of God should not draw fear. God desires to send a little fear of obedience to him to him upon the people. It is that fear we want so we live in holiness to the Lord and not in a way that would not please him.
Dear Heavenly Father help us to strive for holiness out of fear knowing your ability is powerful, that you can shake the mountains we sit upon and are near. That you can send a storm to destroy your children of disobedience. Yet you desire to communicate love by teaching us a fear of sinning or doing wrong to protect us. Help us to have a righteous fear of you and your power. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
