1 And God spake all these words, saying,
2 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:
5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Many of us make objects and things, whether through art, clay, hand crafts or we buy them, without ever thinking these items as being a god or goddess. I think of the world of ancient past, where archaelogist declare these people must of worshipped these things they drew and made, and look at my world and say, maybe not. There has to be more historical evidence to declare something was idol, or a god to a people. For to declare that object like a doll was made for worship most of us would say no it for play, pretend or decoration. We look at these things and wonder why can we not make a decoration or object of play. In certain cultures dolls and stuff are taboo except for maybe a doll with no face but a bonnet. Amish and other groups like them are very careful of these types of things. Most people look and say what the big deal. And truth it seems to be a big deal to God.
God says no graven images, or likeness of anything that is in heaven above or earth beneath or that is in the water or under the earth is to be made. Now I tell you there many things people duplicate that God has made. We think nothing of it. If we think about the tabernacle and things in the temple were representation of the outside of the garden of eden. The sephims outside the holies of holies. No one but priesthood was allowed in. Yet all things were designed and built by God's instruction with no thought of his own laws, no they were for a reminder of his holiness, of the importance of no graven images but the worship of him alone. God's showing mercy on people that would learn to worship him alone, a people that would fail and still receive mercy for a time, and then shown love of correction, because of his love for them that did worship God.
God was merciful to children of obedience only punishing their offspring that hated him. Are we in disobedience by image we display in our homes and on our streets. I think if we way the matter, the issue had to do with the worship of the golden calf. The fact the people had made idol to worship. The fact they turn from God who had taken them out of the land of Egypt. Images of worship could do nothing for man, and it seem to cause man more harm because their ritualistic worship included cutting of their own flesh and even beating themselves as a form of correction to their graven image. God is not pleased with worship of idols. Yet he also concerned about these practices of faith. God sent his Son and allowed him to die for you and me, he was dying in pagan fashion, but he always dying to the laws of man and not God. Yet God decreed his Son would die for the sins of his people and the world, why, because he had to prove his love to us, of willing to give himself through suffering and pain for the price of our sin.
Is God concerned with images, no he is concerned with our hearts and who we worship, his command was to keep us from falling in faith by admiration of handwork of another that is not him. He is concerned with our hearts because the worship of stone was causing harm to the people. He was concern because the world was going after what they could see and not who they could hear with their heart. God desire to protect those that would follow God of all creation and not the creation.
God knows our need for symbols, and if you look at this creation you can see God's handiwork. We concentrate on his handiwork. God knows our need, he knows our life and he knows we need to be remind of his daily presence in our life. Fact as humans it easy not to talk at all to God, but it harder not to talk to God if we love him. He desires for us to be a part of his plans, not distance from not knowing his will.
Dear Heavenly Father draw us to that personal relationship of speaking to you, and the things of this world. Show us your mercy and love as we return what you given us, that same love and grace as we worship only you. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
Continual Scripture Study:Romans 1:20-25 KJV
20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
