Peace Be Still

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Mark 4:35-41 KJV
35 And the same day, when the even was come, he saith unto them, Let us pass over unto the other side.
36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the ship. And there were also with him other little ships.
37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?
39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
41 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

As the waves of life come crashing in, one can feel that one might just be drowned by the sea. Yet as wind and the waves keep rolling more and more, there seem nothing for the disciples to do but to wake Jesus. Why is it in life the storms often blow in and the first thing we do is wait to see how bad this storm gets before saying a prayer. How fast does the storm move in before the ship is almost sunk. Why was not everyone on board alert when the storm began to pour rain from above. I sure it was not the first storm these sea going disciples went through. Yet they were being sunk by the water that come from the waves that overflowed the boat. To have Jesus in a sink boat and it not his time yet, your lucky. See Jesus was going to make it ashore, disciples did not know about their own faith or their condition of faith. They were still being toss to and fro by the slightest storm. They awake Jesus to tell him they were about to sink, and even said do you not care about this. He replies why were you so fearful and where is your faith? Yet before he begins to greatly question them He says Peace be still, and the wind cease and a great calm came. Now they were even more afraid for the winds and the sea obeyed him.

What is it with storms in our life comes that the first extinct is try and take care of the situation our selves. One can only imagine how the disiciple must of been trying hard to dip water out of the boat with some type of bucket. How they perhaps were trying to figure what to do, because it was only a small fishing vessel probably. Any boat in water is small compare to the water it floats in. If you ever had water you had to bale out because of water entering in, you know it near impossible unless the solution to where the water is coming from is fixed. For this instance it was the waves being high going over the rim of the boat. I personally seen a leaky boat with a small hairline crack and it does not take long for it to begin to fill the boat. Either way the disciples were in distress and here is Jesus calm and peacefully sleeping to the rythme of the boat and waves around him. He arises to calm it, and yet scripture does not say if he went back to sleep or not, but he leave an impact on the disciples of asking who is this man.

I find myself wondering and looking at this being only chapter 4 of Mark and they are asking who is this man that even nature force obey him. In the storm are we asking the right person for help, are we asking Jesus for deliverance, are we praying in his name before our Heavenly Father? Simple fact Jesus wants to calm our storms and show us who He is. How he calms our storms and brings us peace is not always the same way. He does not always solve the issues in our life in the way we want. In this case the disciples request was answered. The storm of the night Christ was crucified did not cease. It began with Judas leaving the supper table. It began when they went to the garden of Gethsemane, and continue on through the trial and crucifixion of our Lord, and only did he bring peace when appeared before the disciples. When we think of our own storms in life did we see a betrayal, did we see the trial, did we see the cross that we must beared, and then do we see the peace at the end of the trial. Our trial comes when we try first do it ourselves and the second when we seek the one that can conquer the storm. We may not ourselves be able to stop the waves, but Jesus is either going to take us through the storm, or calm the storm when we ourselves fail, when we ourselves see no hope, when we ourselves find ourselves in the need of our Savior.

One of the first storms of a person's life that they seek the need for a Savior is when they become born again, it is a spiritual war which only Christ can bring peace in and save the drowning soul from hell. In a span of time I seen people leave a church to only face their doom. And it was if lightening was all around and it was time for the bolt to strick its next victim. Then I realize, I am still alive to tell it. I still alive to tell the work of God and to tell how He chooses our time. The disciples were in fear of their very soul, they thought they would drowned. We can not stop a drowning if it meant to be, but Jesus would of walked on water, or floated to shore. It was not the disciples time. It was not their time to be with God above. They were walking and living with the only begotten Son of God. They would be witness to the events of Christ ministry through out their life. It would be enough to rock the world. Yet not all fall to their knees at this time, but a day will come when all knees will bow to Christ.

When we think of the calm of Christ appearance to the disciples it also brought an excitment to them because the scars on Christ was seen. The scars showing he been through the storm. There was no scars on the day the wind calmed on the sea, the storm was not that major and yet Christ chose to calm the sea. The storm of his death caused the disciples to run, some coming to repentance and one not finding repentance. One deny who His friend Jesus was. Denying he was even with him, as Jesus went to trial. Yet Peter would deny based on the prophesy of Christ, and when the rooster crowed he remembered. His sorrow etched in his heart. Jesus return would bring him sweet peace, the kind of peace that would cause Peter to preach, to cause Peter to rise up and take charge of the disciples and lead them in to testifying about Jesus. See the storm had victory with the resurrection, the storm had victory with those scars The storm had victory when he was still speaking to his friends. No doubt this brought a calm and a quieting to their tears.

Not all storms come with the same outcome, but they will always be peace after the storm if you will just wait. Ask Jesus to calm the storm, to deliver, to enable you through your storm to be the victor, and not just the weakling crying dear Lord help. Christ is able to do more then we ask. Let us not forget if we are his children he will do exceeding more then we ask, but not to exceed the will of the Father. The storm may have to be, but the outcome will be peace.

Dear Heavnely Father, grant us the peace and strength we need in the storm of our life. Let us know the outcome must be through the journey and trial and life sometime, but it always land in peace. Lord calm the storms in our life so we can sail smoothly on. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study for Devotion:1 John 5:14-15 KJV
14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
