Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Mark 9:33-35 KJV
33 And he came to Capernaum: and being in the house he asked them, What was it that ye disputed among yourselves by the way?
34 But they held their peace: for by the way they had disputed among themselves, who should be the greatest.
35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all.

Among the disciples came much strife of who was the greatest in the kingdom. It was not just a one time argument it came not only in Capernaum but also at the last supper. Why would they war over being the greatest. They seen Jesus as a great leader or teacher. If you ever knew or seen great people in leadership, they were both a servant to all and knew how to talk to the rest of the elite class of people. What I mean as elite is those in high place or positions of honor. Not that anyone is not equal to them, it they had gain the trust, or power by some means. High positions is because of loyalty of the people or the loyalty of vigilanties. And some even know how to work both good and evil people into allowing them in power. Most of us rather not have the power of the elite, for to do so one has to make decision many rather not have too, because it can cost you your life if you make the wrong decision. Some would say it always good to be a leader, but in truth it is not, because the weight of the people are your responsibility, it not just deciding things for yourself or your family, it deciding for a much larger crowd.

Jesus was humble all the way to the cross, he seen his lordship as being a servant to all. He served when he took time to heal even the least in society as well as the greatest in society. He served man by teaching all people from leaders to the poor. You did not have to enter a gate to listen to Jesus preach. His preaching was free to all. He was a good story teller, and even took questions from the crowd. If ministers took questions from the crowd how long would service be in attendance. It would depend on how many people were welling to put themselves out their to the crowd and ask question about faith. Mainly leaders are seen asking questions of Jesus. These were people use to giving answers and not always the questioner. Yet his disciples asked him freely things concerning the kingdom of God. Yet when Jesus started talking about what you had been arguing about, one learned to shut up and listen. How many of them had learn to shut up and listen, apparently all twelve of them, for at the dinner table of the last supper the question came once more who was the greatest in the kingdom.

In Luke 22:24-30 Jesus is at the last supper table. Not included is where Christ ministered where washing the feet of the disciples, but it perhaps is a greater place to start in regards to how Christ served even to washing and drying the feet of his disciples. The act of servanthood of Christ found throughout his ministry and yet the disciples understood not what it was to follow a good leader in the since of service. Men and woman of the cross of Christ that you would want to follow as leaders beyond Christ in regards to learning the ways of Christ are people that are not afraid to get their hands dirty. A good leader is one that is not afraid to be among the people or afraid to stand up to current leadership. The gentiles were in power, and they lorded their power over the people, yet Christ is clear it not about leadership in regards to power but servanthood of who will respect you for your role as getting your hands a little dirty as well as washing them off by dealing with all kinds of people. There are leaders that would not give you the time a day unless you are so rich that rubbing shoulders with them would only mean a business deal of some sort.

Some want healthy meat to eat and only set to eat the meat while others serve. Yet those that listen to their leaders know if they are wise or not. There are actors in the business of wealth that are said to even talk to the janitors in the buildings they enter. Not afraid to shake hands with people of lower work. Yet they perform before the giants of society. Those actors that took time with people were found to be memorialized in acting world. It is those stories you hear that tell you the humbleness of some people to get to know all and not just the wealthy. Some follow the wealthy hoping to get a small piece of the honor and prestige and other follow not.

If I compare ministers today some are afraid to get their hands a little muddy to talk to the poor of society while others talk to both the rich and the poor equally. Serving both as a friend and counselor. Others are neither, they only take the side of rich and land loosing their church, because it takes all kinds of people to fill it and learning how to balance. How to go out in the church yard and work with those in the field as teachers and servants, learning knew things as well teaching those that know not.

Jesus was speaking in verse 28 of Luke 22 it says and he say are you going to continue in my temptation. Well if you look up the word temptation in the Thayer's greek dictionary it means: an experiment, attempt, trial, proving: the trial of man's fidelity, integrity, virtue, constancy: an internal temptation to sin: of the temptation by which the devil sought to divert Jesus the Messiah from his divine errand. Of course there is the general definition of temptation there also. The point being Christ was humbly walking obeying the Father, to receive his reward as His dear Son. He must complete trial God had set before him to enter the kingdom of heaven. At any time he could do as the devil desire him too. However Jesus knew exactly what the prize was and had seen it. His trial was to go all the way to the cross, die, go into the depth of hell, and rise again on the third day and enter the kingdom of heaven and sit down beside the Father, return to us and continue to teach his followers in love and not in chastisement for it was the Father's will he should die for their sins. Jesus would hold his peace to do so before the leaders of the world he lived in both Jew and Gentile leaders. Humbling himself to the Father despite all else was happening. Humbly come and teach the followers and disciples once more, before going back to paradise in a cloud like elevator. By the way I hope that for the disciples this was the last time he had to tell them about servanthood and they didn't just shut up but truly listened.

Dear Heavenly Father help us to carry our cross to be humble servants but leaders of faith. Help the believer to know the difference of good leaders and those that only are out for what they can get and make by their power. Help us to carry our cross to complet the prize of heaven set before us in humble submission to you. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study for Devotion:Luke 22:24-30 KJV
24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.
25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.
26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.
27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.
28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.
29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;
30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
