The Rescue: Lesson 5
10/05/2021

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Genesis 34:1-31 KJV
1 And Dinah the daughter of Leah, which she bare unto Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.
2 And when Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled her.
3 And his soul clave unto Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the damsel, and spake kindly unto the damsel.
4 And Shechem spake unto his father Hamor, saying, Get me this damsel to wife.
5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter: now his sons were with his cattle in the field: and Jacob held his peace until they were come.
6 And Hamor the father of Shechem went out unto Jacob to commune with him.
7 And the sons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, because he had wrought folly in Israel in lying with Jacob's daughter; which thing ought not to be done.
8 And Hamor communed with them, saying, The soul of my son Shechem longeth for your daughter: I pray you give her him to wife.
9 And make ye marriages with us, and give your daughters unto us, and take our daughters unto you.
10 And ye shall dwell with us: and the land shall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you possessions therein.
11 And Shechem said unto her father and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye shall say unto me I will give.
12 Ask me never so much dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say unto me: but give me the damsel to wife.
13 And the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and said, because he had defiled Dinah their sister:
14 And they said unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that were a reproach unto us:
15 But in this will we consent unto you: If ye will be as we be, that every male of you be circumcised;
16 Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people.
17 But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumcised; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone.
18 And their words pleased Hamor, and Shechem Hamor's son.
19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter: and he was more honourable than all the house of his father.
20 And Hamor and Shechem his son came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, saying,
21 These men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them; let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters.
22 Only herein will the men consent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcised, as they are circumcised.
23 Shall not their cattle and their substance and every beast of theirs be ours? only let us consent unto them, and they will dwell with us.
24 And unto Hamor and unto Shechem his son hearkened all that went out of the gate of his city; and every male was circumcised, all that went out of the gate of his city.
25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.
26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out.
27 The sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and spoiled the city, because they had defiled their sister.
28 They took their sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field,
29 And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and spoiled even all that was in the house.
30 And Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me to make me to stink among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they shall gather themselves together against me, and slay me; and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.
31 And they said, Should he deal with our sister as with an harlot?

Prince Havor the Hivite actions caused the sister of Jacobs sons to be defiled. Most would say is this a culture issue or break down, or is it rape? We live in culture that is neither for or against fidility. We live in a culture where sex before marriage is more common then maybe it should be. People live together to decide if they are suited for each other before making the final commitment of marriage. The church world closes there eyes, beyond preaching against sexual immorality. If the standard is waiting til marriage, then everything this Prince did to Dinah, was act of rape. Dinah by not saying anything or screaming rape, her brother's took upon themselves to not tell this prince Havor what true circumcision was beyond the flesh. What is a little snip if it will satisfy future inlaws and country men who desire to find wives among women of a different culture. I gave Jacobs son's the leverage to kill the Hivites for raping their sister.

Culture or the act of rape? More of the prince seen, saw and wanted. The lust of his eye did not cause him to desire to know this girl but to defile her. Key word is in verse 2. He just happened to like the girl after defiling her. Apparently she decided to make the best of the situation. The father knew not what had happened for he was angry at first of his sons killing the men of the Hivites and taking their women.

Culture clash or justification. The law of Moses had not been estalished at this time nore where their anyone that established laws, it was the strongest survived. Yet Israel was peaceful with their neighbor until their neighbor hurts one of their own. Is brotherhood and sisterhood still in vogue today. I suspect is. However most people are more civil by using the laws of the land for most legal retaliation, and others pray and seek God's revenge instead of their own. We have to ask in this case the prince seen, desire and thought who going to stop me. It just happened the girl dealt kindly with him, til her brothers could revenge. However his title alone makes it clear that some drastic measure had to be taken for it not to occur again to any of their women.

Justification or murder by Israel's sons. If you live in the hills yep murder would of probably happened if the law did not protect. If the law does not revenge and the family does not, God will revenge. This month we talking about evil. God does revenge evil. God does defend women. When man fails God will destroy and revenge a people. How long will the woman suffer, is unknown, sometimes God revenge is swift and sometimes slow. In Noah day, God said man was evil. However it took hundred years to build the ark by Noah, and God mercy was hundred years from the time of judgment. If God revengous, because man refused to repent then the revenge is justifiable. Jacob's son took revenge because in their family they obey their own culture and the Prince obeyed his culture. The woman had gone out to commune with her friends in a place that apparently was not necessarily owned by Jacob or if was, no trespassing issue was declared in the rape. Prince would of been making his own laws on the land he called his. He came to the city gate of Israel to talk about peace between their tribe and Jacob's. The sons said circumcize yourself and we will intermingle with you. However they did not talk about circumcision of the heart with this tribe but only physical circumcision. So two days after they circumcized and the men were in pain, they came into their village and killed those men and took the woman.

Man revenge being swift, and full knowledge of the revenge came to Jacob when in the last verse, "should he deal with our sister as a harlot?" If he come to Jacob and ask for her hand in marriage or part of the treaty things would of been different. Do we infringe on another culture not knowing it? Do we stand by and declare what is true, that a woman has a right to her own body. A right to be loved and not used. A right not to feel defiled by who she makes love too. A right not to feel abused.

The government talking about women's rights, along with abortion. If the baby a woman is carrying is because of rape should she have a right to abort anytime in the pregnancy. What if rape occurs but it not report til after full knowledge that the woman is pregnant by several months. Maybe even full term. Psychological warfare of being violated can be hard on a woman. She might feel guilty for a time, until she realized she is the victim because Guy forced her to have sex or put her in position with drugs or alcohol to have sex. Then what? Truth be told she is still carrying life within her. That child is using her body for incubator, but soon will be absents from her body, where she can make a life choice for the child that grew within her. A reasonable choice of putting the child up for adoption or keeping the baby if her spouse, and/or her can handle the reason she conceived. Early abortion like the morning after or before the baby has heart and lungs most could accept I think in the case of rape. Yet the issue is still hard because the man that raped her has now entraped her into responsibility she does not want with her body. It worse then having unwanted kitten in one's house. Okay that kitten not unwanted that we took in, just created an issue. Just like that baby maybe a part of a person, the responsibility has fallen on the woman to handle it. The memory of the rape is hard enough. Yet woman for centuries have had to deal with these issues. Is their resolution, probably not one that all would agree on. However what should be done to the man that rapes a woman will that can be taken care of by the law. One he can be castrated, he can walk with a tattoo that marks him for life, instead of sign in his yard. There are solutions to the problem, that government probably would not abide by.

The point is a woman violate has for centuries had to rely on God's revenge or revenge herself when opportunity came for her to revenge. What does God's word say? Revengous is mine saith the Lord. I will revenge and I will repay. Can we wait on God's revenge ladies? I do not know the answer. It takes God's mercy and grace in a woman's life to be able to forgive that is a work of God. However remember that coals will be pour on the man head.

Dear Heavenly Father, the fires are burning to protect woman help the solution to protect the innocent as well. May the protection of woman be heard in our land as truth and not rumors by our leaders. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: Romans 12:17-21 KJV
17 Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men.
18 If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.
19 Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
20 Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
21 Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
