Seen A Great LIght 10/3/2020
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisMatthew 4:12-25 KJV
12 Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison, he departed into Galilee;
13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim:
14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,
15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;
16 The people which sat in darkness saw great light; and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death light is sprung up.
17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
18 And Jesus, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
19 And he saith unto them, Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.
20 And they straightway left their nets, and followed him.
21 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them.
22 And they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.
24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.
25 And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.
The rising of the sun in the early morning hours is the fresh moment of the day, and yet it is also the hour of waking for many as well as for nature. The birds begin to sing, and bees and bugs begin their buzzing, only to be caught by frog half asleep on a log, to the begining of fish awaking from their nap in the stream, and foxes, deer, and rabbits coming out of hiding to the warmth of the sun. Yet it this dawning of the morning light that few realize the brightness of the sun that stirs even those in the darkest dens or crevices of the earth.How do these animal in the darken holes know that the sun finally arising one might ask, and only God knows the true answer or nature of the beast.
To leave your home only to become popular elsewhere is only natural phenomenon of fame for those who do a unique gift or talent that not seen in the land that is darken by a new way of doing something. You take the first cotton gin in our nation and how fast did it travel in the south because of its ability to separat the seed from the actual cotton. Now anything to make the task of that made the manufacturing and harvesting of cotton easier was a plus in society in the south. Everyone wanted one. Yet it was that one piece of equipment that sprung fame because of its ability. The ability to increase speed and income was a plus. With the etertainment world we see a star is born on many you tube videos. A star for a season or a star for a moment in time. The ability to get fame and popularity takes only a moment of the right attraction for the right crowd of people to the ability to speak to the world. Ever watch a magician, an acrobat, or clowning, a good act whether you like that sort of thing or not is attractable to the majority of people because of skill levels.
When we see Jesus attracting people not of his home town, one these people were seeing something new happening from healing, story telling, maybe even wonders not yet seen in their area. However did it make Jesus into godlike, or was he already this superstar, that being outside his hometown would attract people far and wide from many towns. Scripture says he left Galilee after John the Baptist was behead, but he went to an area that was darkened and now had seen a great light, light being Jesus. Can the president and any super star walk down a road and not attract some sort of attention, just because of who they are, or does it take the popularity of the tv and newspapers for others to take a moment to listen to them because of there fame. Take them to a area that never heard of them are they as popular only for a moment perhaps unless they have something to offer or wow the crowd with.
Jesus because of who he was began to heal people and to speak to these people about God and faith. He began to teach, and demonstrate the power of God. Jesus was a great light to them because of this ability. Missionaries on the foreign field and else where learn that the power pray, God's word, and the ability to speak to people are very important. Without the ability the light of Christ is only a small light that does not attract the crowd. There are churches today that are small and they claim that there was a time they were on fire for God in the community. Some will argue some moved away, or people grew up and married and went else where to church, but their church no long thrived as it once did. It not always the people that not allowing Christ to shine, people grow old, get sick and not able to do the work of the ministry anymore. Others come in able to do the work of Jesus, bring folks into the church. Those are the people that need those that know how to teach, and preach to do their job as well. Some are able to do both, but the work of God must come by joint effort. The light of the church seen through the believers in the church to pronounce the good news to lost within its doors and outside its doors.
Jesus is light, the light of God shining in his life because he was and is the word and only begotten son of God. He began to shined forth because of miracles and preaching the kingdom of God done in areas that never meet someone like Jesus, a prophet, or teacher of God's word. They were now enlighten by the words of Christ and his ability to do great things. The fame of Christ traveled from one darkened city to another, making the light of Christ shine even brighter as the crowds began to gather from place to place. Places without hope now with hope of Christ because they seen the hope that was within their darkened city. They seen this man that could do miracles and teach about the kingdom of God and repentance. In Christ hometown he was not the super star though they knew the prophesy surrounding Jesus, knew his ability to do miracles, Jesus was apart of their faith, that they did not have the unexpected faith of their neighbors.
If you grow up with the word of God the answer is Jesus can heal, Jesus can do it when all things are possible. The idea so etched in our minds, that when we pray faith comes alive, without question. Yet when you put Jesus in a place it like the little jester popping out of the box, the surprise keeps happening over and over of the miracles happening where light been shut out for decades, the unbelievable now possible. The beginning of faith is only a spark, but the potential of light grows into a wild fire of faith. Jesus ability grew famous to people from all over began to seek him for healing and knowledge of the kingdom of God.
Your not God, nor are you Christ and neither am I, but is your light shining, your desire to pray with others and share the good news of Jesus even to people that never heard the Gospel story. Many today only know about some man dying on a cross for sin, but they never heard story of Jesus much beyond his birth at Christmas, and it seems like it harder and harder to find manger scenes in our world today. Is the light being faded from our holy days that shined once in a darkened world that told the world that Jesus was born. There more announcements for Halloween it seems then for Christmas and Easter, is there a problem arising or only the fact people like evil perhaps more then joy and peace. If we want Christ light to shine in the world around us we must do our part as believers to let the light of Christ to shine forth. To let the light of Christ shine forth that says we care.
Look for a moment at the continual scripture study, the hour of darkness in Mark 15, seemed all darkened by the sky, but with the darkness the light of Christ still shone as the soldier said, "this man was the Son of God". Even with his death there were those in the darkest hour on the cross knew they seen a great light, but he had not risen at this moment. What would those that understood, know when he arose, that Christ was a greatest light that the world as ever known.
Dear Heavenly Father bring forth the light of Christ in the darken world of our day and time, so others can see the brightness of Christ light still is and is to come. Heavenly Father, send your ministers to spread your word teaching others to share your word too. Send each of us to share your word to those in need. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
Continual Scripture Study: Mark 15:33-39 KJV
33 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.
36 And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.
37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.
38 And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.
39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
