17 And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them.
18 And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.
19 And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.
20 And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.
21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
22 But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?
23 Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?
24 But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.
25 And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.
26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day. What is it to spend a working day with Jesus. Jesus work was teaching the Gospel of Faith. There were doctors and Pharisees(Jewish minister/physicians) that gather from all over to meet this Jesus and hear what He taught. The Lord was present to heal them. Men brought in a bed with a man with palsy that could not walk. Which is harder for Jesus to say your sins are forgiven or to get up and walk. Now the proof he had power to forgive sin came with the power to heal. What does it mean to forgive sin. That was the law to forgive someone, it was not take revenge. Eye for eye and tooth for a tooth was about legal judgment not judgment by individuals. There is a difference in someone going to trial for sin and something that sins and can be forgiven instead of taken to trial. Jesus was not teaching any strange thing here. When he talks about the power to forgive it meant that he had power to forgive like everyone else. Why was the healing even necessary at this point. Pharisees knew the law of God. Read the verses in the continual scripture study below. Take time to open your own Bible and read how this laws were to be applied, if you want to study on your own some and dig a little deeper. Leaders often gather to valuate people teaching or bring crowds of people together. This is nothing new. It happens today as well in all forms of government.
The way Jesus was talking sounded like false teaching and the pharisees and doctors of the law cry blasphemies(teaches falsely or make false statement about the law). What was Jesus doing to the teachers and doctors of the law. To make a claim He could forgive, could he heal a man, they perhaps thought not. Yet he told the man to get up and pick up his couch and walk and he did just that. When you talking about the ability to forgive can you forgive, most people struggle with forgiving something in their life time, when other things are easy to forgive. What is the big deal to the pharisees on teaching of forgiveness did they not teach forgiveness. No they taught sacrifice and that required a Priest to offer sacrifice which they would get the meat from the sacrifice. This was taking food right out of their bellies this teaching of Jesus and God.
What happens when a group of people do not study the laws of Old Testament to see clearly what it states? is one gets people that goes about picking one verse and obeying it. If you look at the verses I posted today anyone obeying eye for eye if done for personal vengeous would be taking scripture out of context. Eye for Eye is posted in the continual scripture passage. What am I talking about? Will if I decided you caused my blindness and so I poked your eye out because you blinded me, then I be in error of the law. This statement is for judging before a jewish court of law. There is laws that are broken that go before trial and others that are broken that is forgiven without trial, but all sin is to be forgiven despite what it is. Hatfields and McCoy revenge eye for eye and a tooth for a tooth would have been short lived if they had understood this passage or had in those early years been able to read those passage in the woods. Instead one preacher spoke eye for eye and a tooth for a tooth and that was all that was remembered.
Jesus shows that God has given him the authority to forgive. The issue is can he forgive the man with palsy. Disability at one time was thought to be because of sin, and in a since it can be if injury happens because of carelessness or not obeying proper instruction. Yet the sins of the man with palsy was forgivable. This man with palsy was going to be healed for proof of his sins being forgiven. The Pharisees were afraid and said they had seen a strange thing. What was strange about a man healed and sins forgiven. One has to remember that Roman law was not Jewish law. The people had been for time in exile to other lands and not just under Roman law, where other laws were taught to the people of Israel. God's laws were now being taught to a generation not familiar with the laws of God. People not of faith were being taught the laws of God that never knew them. Jews that return that did not repent to God that brought them back to Israel, found themselves under the wrath of God and wrath of man by man's strange laws. The Pharisees should of had a good understanding of the law of God, but it seems that they themselves understood not the law of forgiveness. God gave them proof through a sign of healing of a man with palsy. God's present was known in the above passage to the Priest as being their with Christ the Son of Man. Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit and filled and it was known and yet the Pharisees and Doctors thought these things were strange. Why does anyone need proof of the ability to forgive sin. Maybe it was not the Pharisees or doctors that needed to know but perhaps it was the man on the couch or his friends that carried him in. Yet the sign was given of a healing. And all that witness were now afraid of this sign.
Which is more power to heal the soul or to heal the body? Well the soul can be healed but not always the body. The soul can be heal with repentance, the soul can be healed immediately like the man healed from palsy. How long is the soul sick with the need of forgiveness, or the need to forgive someone else. The truth is we have the power to forgive instantly, but we do not always exercise it. We might even stew over the crime for a time. Yet the power was ours to forgive. God's power to forgive is instanteously when we repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. If nothing else it will be receive later, the time is now, if you just turn from sin. Truth is when someone makes a mistake by accident or sometimes even on purpose the person that has to forgive someone hopes that person never does it again. The need for revenge is not to be ours. Yet the law and judgment is in place for the protection of the people.
Dear Heavenly Father may your judgment and law reign and may forgiveness be greater still, for your wrath is great against the children of disobedience. Lord forgive us in our trespasses as we forgive those that sin against us. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
