05/03/2021

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Proverbs 3:1-35 KJV
1 My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
2 For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
3 Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:
4 So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.
9 Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
10 So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
11 My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:
12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
14 For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
16 Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.
17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
18 She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
19 The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.
20 By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.
21 My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:
22 So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.
23 Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.
24 When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
25 Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.
26 For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.
27 Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.
28 Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.
29 Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.
30 Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.
31 Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.
32 For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.
33 The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.
34 Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.
35 The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.

Through out the Old Testament godly instruction had to do with the phlacteries having the commandments written and attached to the body, but also to have in engraved in the heart and mind of a person. Because tatooing was consider heathen art and not a jewish art they would write the laws on a piece of leather and put them in a pouch that would be tied to there arms and also placed between the frontlets part of a helmet. These pouches were called phylacteries in New Testament and in the Old Testament they were frontlets or wore on the hand/probably arm a leather case with the commandments in them. The purpose to remind Israel of the laws of faith.

When they literally did this it became a show to the Priesthood of uniqueness of the cases and sizes, yet it also did something else and remind the nation of Israel of the laws of God, even when under foreign governments. It was to teach Israel the importance of the laws. Everytime you see these reminders in scripture to write them to the table of one's heart, it speaking about to remember the laws and not just to physically bind them to one body, but to bind them to the soul and heart. As a New Testament believer called Christians God writes his laws by the Holy Spirit on our heart. By his Spirit he corrects us, and by knowledge we have wisdom and understanding of what these laws are and the importance of the fact that they should be obeyed.

Though obedience of the commandments of God will not grant us eternal life, it does keep us safe if we obey God. The knowledge that commandments of God are more then ten, we can understand that what God's Spirit speaks to our heart is important to follow and obey. Even to how we give and share with others needs to be followed in order to be blessed by God. To learn to trust in God in all areas of our life, from how we give, how we obey, how we seek for truth and knowledge to form wise decisions, or simply following God's advice in our individual situation.

If this Proverb could be settled by 2 verse it be verses 5-6. Simply not to lean on our own understanding, but to acknowledge God in everything we do and to fully trust and lean on God. Wisdom comes by learning to trust in the one that in ultimately incharge of our life. It does not mean a person that trust in God does not make their own decisions, it means our reliance that God going to warn us when we think about making bad choice or teaches us the blessings of good ones. One does not have to be in fear of the decision made if they trusting in God's judgment of the situation.

Don't oppressor your neighbor or plot evil against others. This is actually good wisdom, because those that do often find themselves in a lot of trouble either with God or with man. To be kind to be honest, to love our enemies, to be kind to those that persecute you. If we keep our trust in God and in Christ we will inherit Glory, but we must stop is our obedience part of our faith and trust in God. There is a difference in atonement of grace received through the cross of Jesus, and talking about trusting daily and relying on God's promises and blessings. Wisdom if we accept Christ as our Savior, and receive his forgiveness, our desire is to follow in his footsteps as far as obeying God. Yet the things we do will not enter us into heaven, yet some things we do will rain the blessing of God upon us. If we are wise in what God expects as far as believing first and then obedience we will see eternity. Our works should be a sign and witness of our faith in God. Receiving Christ has Savior and Lord being the first step we take in having our eternity sealed by God. Trust in the Lord is the first step of wisdom for a believer.

Dear Heavenly Father, there is a lot to this one proverb, but our faith and trust in you is far the greatest thing we can learn from it. To be wise is to learn to trust in your Spirit and not in ourselves. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
