| Jeremiah 6:16-30 KJV
16 Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.
17 Also I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken.
18 Therefore hear, ye nations, and know, O congregation, what is among them.
19 Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it.
20 To what purpose cometh there to me incense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me.
21 Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will lay stumblingblocks before this people, and the fathers and the sons together shall fall upon them; the neighbour and his friend shall perish.
22 Thus saith the LORD, Behold, a people cometh from the north country, and a great nation shall be raised from the sides of the earth.
23 They shall lay hold on bow and spear; they are cruel, and have no mercy; their voice roareth like the sea; and they ride upon horses, set in array as men for war against thee, O daughter of Zion.
24 We have heard the fame thereof: our hands wax feeble: anguish hath taken hold of us, and pain, as of a woman in travail.
25 Go not forth into the field, nor walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy and fear is on every side.
26 O daughter of my people, gird thee with sackcloth, and wallow thyself in ashes: make thee mourning, as for an only son, most bitter lamentation: for the spoiler shall suddenly come upon us.
27 I have set thee for a tower and a fortress among my people, that thou mayest know and try their way.
28 They are all grievous revolters, walking with slanders: they are brass and iron; they are all corrupters.
29 The bellows are burned, the lead is consumed of the fire; the founder melteth in vain: for the wicked are not plucked away.
30 Reprobate silver shall men call them, because the LORD hath rejected them.
|The old pathway is called often the straight and narrow road of faith. Over the years one may learns the value of exercise even in old age. One learns first to exercise by family, friend, or at the least school. Children learn to run and play, though it actually more of instinct from the time one begins to learn to crawl and walk, but often parents learn to exercises the legs some of their infants before they ever learn to crawl and walk. Babies begin to push up with their legs when one holds them when they are facing a person. At the beginning stages of learning to walk and crawl one has no concept of why they perhaps doing this very thing. If you watch the animal kingdom often horses, cows and similiar creatures learn to stand and walk same day they are born. Kittens and puppies begin to move as well but only to nurse. There is a point to follow the old paths of faith one must understand where faith began. The origin of your faith. Who taught you about the Lord. What did they teach you about faith.
Visiting other churches one learns not all churches are the same in freedom of expression and some are very legalistic. Legalism has it own reward in a since if applied correctly. Expression of faith is good only if it encourages others to have faith as well and not destroys other's faith. Legalism is fine, if it does not stop the common sense process that protects you and forces you to leave a burning building that on fire. Common sense of going down with the ship is not a positive thing. Yet the devil even stands on his ship as it sinks going into hell. One has to ask is when is the right to leave a sink ship when you protected all that you can, even if it means going down with the ship to save a lost soul from drowning as captain.
What must one do to protect oneself first and others. Will in faith receiving Christ is necessary to be able to testify of the works of God, because the Holy Spirit will lead and guide you on how to lead and teach. Jeremiah is being instructed by the Lord of the Old paths with it comes warning of the conditions of Israel. The very things Jeremiah is called to preach against is the life style of Israel of warning them that they are not following the ways of God or even obeying the truth of God's laws or word. As Christians we are still called to submit to the ways of God. Different things draws us away from the ways of God. Israel a nation that believed in God and yet as a nation they also rejected the ways of God to the point God was going to send the enemy in to destroy them. The agenda was to bring Israel back to his ways, because they were fixing to see the life style of the enemy and the road they were travel was to live in the corruption of the enemy because of their disobedience to God.
Sin comes and corrupts a righteous home. It comes without warning and also temptation of that really does not change one's faith. One has to decide if sin one is doing effecting only themselves, others, or the world. Fact is sin sin. It matters not if it only effecting you. One sin starts the process of running away from the ways of God. If one on the pathway that leads to righteous living, and stumbles because of sin, the dirt can be brushed off, but if you go over the edge you better hope the Lord has provide a safety net to catch you, or the burning gates of hell is wide open. What is the safety net for the believers in Christ, it is knowing salvation begins with Christ and with faith unto belief. The old road of faith begins and is the covering that we need for when we fail God. It not accuse to sin, but it is a safety net to keep one out of hell. Faith is the very act of hope. Hope reliance is on the word of God that promised us His Son was the final sacrifice for all our sins. It never meant that as a believer we would not be corrected. Yet what means is that faith we have in Jesus is clearly seen in our hearts. Our deliver is our heart cry when we fail. When we yield knowingly to temptation, God's power to forgive is great, but it ashame to our faith when we sin openly.
Our sin can take us further then we want to ever go. One pack of cigarrettes can lead to ten packs of cigarettes in a day. One slice of cake can lead to the whole cake. Yet we say we only live once. Ignoring the warnings of not being able to breath or be able to fit in those jeans. Israel gone to far, and not God was calling them to repentance. Warning them the enemy had great technology, but if they would turn to Him he would deliver. Telling them follow the old pathways. Follow his leading and they would find rest and protection on the old pathways. Where are you today, protecting yourself by following the ways of devil or the ways of God. God's way is best. His protection in all circumstances is his if one will follow the pathway of righteousness. God says one more thing about his protection despite sin that he lay a stumbling block in zion. That stumbling was Jesus. Jesus did it God's way and the enemy killed him, only for God to raise him back up.
Dear Heavnely Father help us to follow in the pathway of righteousness, remembering the pathway of faith and how it began in our life. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
