Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Luke 6:47-49 KJV
(47) Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:
(48) He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
(49) But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

What is it like to have rain beat on a house in a flood, only to see the water make it soggy till it collapses? Well many people build homes out of cardboard boxes on the street. It is a make shift shelter to help keep out the weather. Yet there no guarantees it will last when the rain comes down, or the puddle of water in the streets get high enough to carry it to next higher ground. In all likelihood it will collapse before then. Yet it is a box ship without a sail. No rudder in the storm, or anchor to keep it in place. Often people that are free spirit might fight the description of going where they want when they wan too. Some taking it to the stream of never needing any direction because any direction they go is right in their owns eyes. Those that have direction may be following in the right direction but turn around in the wrong direction at any given time because in their eyes it not wrong.

A person who builds on a solid foundation does so looking for solid ground to build upon, with rock surface beneath. In the hill country it is not unusual to find areas of solid rock. There are rocks that can only be moved by a jackhammer of some sort. Yet Christ foundation is solid, it is built on the word of God. Jesus is the chief corner stone, the solid rock in which all houses are built on. Jesus represents the Word of God in the flesh, yet the flesh by itself is destructible, but what remains is God’s word. Second Jesus rose up after dying on the cross for man’s sin, he had incorruptible body. A body not made of flesh/destruction, but made for eternity. The word of God is made for eternity. The very foundation of God’s word brings solidness to a person life no matter where they go. If a free spirit person has the solid rock as his foundation of his beliefs, then he is only walking in the right direction, other wise he is like a ship with a sail.

A person needs values or foundation to stand upon, even if everything is destroyed. Yet a solid foundation and walls built by the word of God will not be destroyed. God’s word if solid the rain can come, the waves of the sea can crash against the side of the house and it will not be moved to the next hill far away. People need solid structure, especially children, but adults too. Structure so that work is something that is part of the solid routine. This habit of solid routine can be taught in the form of discipline. God’s word is not structure of discipline but freedom through Christ Jesus. It is not a yoke of slavery or about the law but walking by the Spirit. The Spirit may speak to you to do something and you do it. It is learning sole reliance on God. It is about building a foundation on love, hope, faith, and compassion for others. It the attitude of my house will stand if you love and believe God and care for others. To ignore God will only mean your house is not built on solid foundation. If Noah had not built an ark because he thought the rain would not come, he would of died. If Abraham had not gone to the promise land he would not of known the hope of faith. The prodigal son found his faith after trying to do things his way. It always has to be God’s way and better a servant then nothing at all in God’s house. Yet in all truth we are more then a servant but a son or daughter in the kingdom of God.

Dear Heavenly Father as your child remind me daily of the need to be built on your word starting with faith in you and your word. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
