Uncircumcised Saved By Grace
05/19/2016

Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Ephesians 2:1-22 KJV
(1) And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
(2) Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
(3) Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
(4) But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
(5) Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)
(6) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
(7) That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.
(8) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
(9) Not of works, lest any man should boast.
(10) For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
(11) Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands;
(12) That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:
(13) But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
(14) For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
(15) Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
(16) And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
(17) And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.
(18) For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
(19) Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;
(20) And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;
(21) In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:
(22) In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

The Gentile nation was not under the covenant that God made with Abraham. Abraham one of the first of his generation to be circumcised by faith. Noah was circumcised by faith, but not by flesh. The covenant of Abraham sealed by fleshly act of man being circumcised. Today some countries even circumcise their women, but not because of Jewish tradition. In fact that would be a whole other topic that would in today’s culture seem like abuse in our modern world. The act of circumcision is often seen as a concern for health in the modern world, but it original design had to do with covenant God made with Abraham. Every eight day old boy was to be circumcised. Now in modern world it happens often immediately and no one thinks a thing about it. Those who follow not this custom, in old age might have to do it. Yet the very act of circumcision does not make one circumcised by God. Circumcision was only an act of demonstration of faith. Circumcision also meant in ancient Jewish world that the Jew would raise their child up knowing the laws of God. We know Abraham culture was not under the Moses’ law of faith. That God’s law of faith for Abraham came about Abraham obedience to go to the promise land and also works of righteousness. Doing good things and not evil a form of godliness/ or an act of love and kindness to others. Demonstration of mercy and grace in Abraham’s life. If one put Abraham’s life under the scope of the law he perhaps would not of survived well in that time period. His walk was a walk of faith not by what he could see but by going forward as God directed.

Was the law of Moses’ day abolished? Did it change, it was fleshly law and a law of obedience to God. It was demonstrating acts of kindness and judgment on oneself and others. Instruction how to live for God and not the devil. The law of Moses’ was grievous to those that knew not the law. It became a time of judgment for those ignorant of the law. If you knew not the law and broke the law, one could still be punished for it. Our land of rebellion often causes a person to pay for a crime they do not believe they committed. Without education of the law one finds themselves sometimes in opposition of the law. In times past those in ignorance did know that faith was the requirement for salvation and the circumcision of the law began in their life of those choosing to live in the commonwealth of Israel.

The separation of the law and faith had not developed in some cultures. Yet the law of the Old Testament was to teach the things God accept and did not accept. The transgression of the law was to teach obedience to righteous living. The law of legalizing gay marriage in our nation would be consider a law against God and not society necessarily. One has to ask are we living in a gentile nation or a Christian/Jewish nation. The original laws were formed from Biblical principals, yet our world has changed around us by many cultures in our nation. With many cultures living within a nation one way of changing a law to suit their beliefs is to rise up into political arena and change the law. Making the old laws by tradition sometimes wrong. When fundamental rights are being destroyed by someone else these laws of change seem justifiable. Yet sometimes it becomes a law against God. Some states are not God states meaning they do not put God in their constitution, is this a legal issue with our national law. Should those states be oust from our land. Well it not so simple. With freedom one can have any religion and in today’s world atheism is often consider a religion of unbelief.

The idea faith existing with or without the law of God is greater than the law of works. People thought it matter not about faith if one only obeyed the law, that heaven was a guarantee, not understanding without God, one might see God but judgment would be upon you. With belief came hope of salvation through faith in what God spoke to you. For example believed God and it was counted as righteousness. Righteousness coming about by the law. To understand that the gentiles were lost because of no faith is simple, but to bring the gentiles in the law of faith had to be taught. The law of faith was taught by Jesus. The law of faith was demonstrated by Jesus. Then the people crucified him, because they understood not he was the Son of God and the Messiah to come. His purpose to redeem the people under the law of mortal sin and redeem to the law of faith. The demonstration of prophesy given that God’s word is true to the unbeliever. That prophesy of the Messiah is real. The purpose of Jesus resurrection for one is to demonstrate man could not kill the law of God but also that through belief in Jesus one would be saved through belief. The death on the cross burying our sin and the resurrection being given for proof of eternal life. Anyone looking to Jesus would be saved upon belief.

God loved us so much to redeem us from law of sin, because with belief the law of faith could be established through a right relationship with God. The faith of Abraham reestablished by obedience to the Spirit of God through faith. Going to the Promise Land might seem foolish without a map, but obedience for a meager piece of land makes sense if God spoke to you and you realized it was important to obey God. God can keep your feet from slipping in sin if one will obey Him.

Dear Heavenly Father it is by your grace we are saved through faith and not by the law. Teach us to walk by your Spirit walking in belief to what you speak to our hearts. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
