Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

1 Kings 3:16-28 KJV
(16) Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him.
(17) And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.
(18) And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house.
(19) And this woman's child died in the night; because she overlaid it.
(20) And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom.
(21) And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear.
(22) And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.
(23) Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living.
(24) And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.
(25) And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.
(26) Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it.
(27) Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof.
(28) And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.

The jealous rage of a woman and a lack of fear of what a king could do caused a women to try and take another woman’s baby. One of the hardest things women go through is a loss of a child, because not only does it effect one’s hormone’s it effects one’s psychology. Someone women have postpartum depression after giving birth to the point they could kill a child. I had two mother’s cats with four kittens a piece once. They would steal each others kittens if they heard the kittens crying. The mother instinct to hold even when a child is not your own is strong. Yet psychology the women who lost her child was jealous of her friend and took what belong not to her. The real mother would do anything to protect her living baby even if it meant to loose the baby to someone else.

Moses was born to a women who loved her son, but did everything he could to protect him. The princess found the baby boy and was smitten with him. The king would honor his daughter with allowing her to keep the baby, not realizing this one little boy would cause the fall of Egypt with the removal of the Hebrew slaves from the land of Egypt. The hardest thing the Hebrew mother did was allow the princess to take her son, but he was protected by the king. One has to wonder did Solomon come from the ancient history of his people. The real mother will to do anything to save her child’s life. As the king sat on his throne looking at two harlots and one baby, what would he do to determine who the mother is sounds cruel until one realizes the jealousy of the women who had lost her baby. The women had lost her baby while sleeping beside him, smothering him not out of anger but by mistake. Her mind not right, not even in the presence of the king. Yet to determine the true ownership, one had to be proven that the one claiming to be the mother cared nothing about the baby, but was only jealous.

Can you give someone up so they live, or is jealousy so much that death to that individual is more desired. Wisdom of Solomon was short lived, but this story continues on as parents allow their offspring to sprout wings to fly into adulthood. Every parent knowing sooner or later they have to give up their child. As the natural mother of the baby in this passage was looking to her child as the king threaten to have her child sawed in half, her only thought is how can I rescue my child. Giving the baby to her roommate seemed like the only way to keep her child alive. As she cried out give my son to this women. The king, knew that she was the real mother. A real mother learns to sacrifice her own happiness for her child. The king said give this baby back to his mother.

Dear Heavenly Father teach us the sacrifice does not mean one will loose. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
