05/15/2016

Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Psalms 86:1-17 KJV
(1) A Prayer of David. Bow down thine ear, O LORD, hear me: for I am poor and needy.
(2) Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee.
(3) Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily.
(4) Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
(5) For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.
(6) Give ear, O LORD, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications.
(7) In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me.
(8) Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works.
(9) All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name.
(10) For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.
(11) Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.
(12) I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore.
(13) For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell.
(14) O God, the proud are risen against me, and the assemblies of violent men have sought after my soul; and have not set thee before them.
(15) But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.
(16) O turn unto me, and have mercy upon me; give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thine handmaid.
(17) Shew me a token for good; that they which hate me may see it, and be ashamed: because thou, LORD, hast holpen me, and comforted me.

God created me to be human, with all my humanity I still find a need of God’s help in times of trouble and times of need. To call God sometimes yes I even get angry. Is it to my shame that I do, no it part of humanity that no one talks about. The talking to God about life and life problems. Today is Pentecost Sunday. A day of remember the Holy Spirit and is call to the world to repent and glorify God. A call that has gone out from the first sin of man to even today. Pentecost Sunday a day to remember that God gave the Holy Spirit to the first church in Jerusalem, to be able to go with boldness sharing the Gospel of Jesus. Yet this Sunday I find myself stuck in Psalms for almost another year. When we done with Psalms more traditional messages will be typed of special Christian Sunday’s. Yet today. I find myself ask what are we need of from God.

What are we need of God: The filling of His Spirit, to the food for our bellies. Yet some will say they satisfy their own spirit and they make money for their own bellies, so they do not understand the need for God. Our need of God is not the same as Hebrew people plight out of Egypt or is it. Unless one is rich they find themselves in a nursing home in old age if they survive. The need of a person in a nursing home, can be as simple as help with bath, to literally being spoon feed. At some point the human need is reliance on others if one lives long enough to see it, if not before. The need to rely on God begins at birth. Yet God gives us parents to take care of those needs, but not all are responsible. God is our Heavenly Father. A father that looks upon the humanity he created and he sees our human frailties to the poin the wants to empower us to be able to live holy lives unto Him. To live a life to bring hope of eternal life with Him to the world.

David in this Psalms seen himself as king a place of power, but at the time, seen his as a ruler to be intuned with God for the nations around him came to country in search of God. Many nations come still seeking God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They come in hopes to gain power and some out of fear of God. Wanting to know how to appease this God of judgment and wrath. Israel was proven not to be exempt from God’s correction. David was anointed King by the Holy Spirit. No tongues of fire descend from above on David but the oil of anointing ran down his beard. Not sure he had beard but it metaphor so if you go looking you might not find that one. Yet the oil representing being chosen by God to be king. Anointed and chosen were the disciples, and yet without the Holy Spirit the ability to preach and teach by God’s power could not happen. Anyone might be able to teach scripture but something come from the anointing of the Holy Spirit in a person’s life to spread the Gospel and to glorify God. The need of God to enable us to walk by His Spirit comes upon receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and repenting of sin. The baptism, and filling comes from God when a person understand who He is and receives him. David understood for the time period that God was his Salvation and Salvation to the world, yet his need to be a witness of the good things of God was great in David’s life.

To be as David a chosen vessel of the Holy Spirit was not as if David had not already chosen from early childhood his desire to serve God even while tending his father’s flock. He knew God delivered him from the wild beast of field. He knew the power of God in his life by overcoming his enemies in victory. Yet he fear not God himself but the enemies and beast of the field. His need to fear God was great and God ripped the kingdom from David hands for a short time period, and God restored the kingdom. Did this cause David to fear God more, or help him understand the wrath of God.

As one reflects on David’s life one has to ask is the fear of God in your own life great. Do we only seek God when a need or crisis arise. One may be on dangerous grounds abusing God in the since of neglecting one’s own relationship and ability to glorify God. God wants a relationship with each of us. Not just someone to hand out every time we have a need. God will provide for our needs if we trust and ask, but it not always how we would like. Yet God always gives His Spirit to those that seek him and desire to fear Him, know Him and ask for His guidance. God gives each of his children the ability to share his love, compassion and goodness to others.

Dear Heavenly Father though tongues of fire might not be seen, your power still comes on your children to glorify you. On this day of Pentecost may your Spirit come forth on the believers to do your will and glorify you. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
