Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Judges 4:1-9 KJV
(1) And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, when Ehud was dead.
(2) And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, that reigned in Hazor; the captain of whose host was Sisera, which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles.
(3) And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.
(4) And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time.
(5) And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in mount Ephraim: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.
(6) And she sent and called Barak the son of Abinoam out of Kedeshnaphtali, and said unto him, Hath not the LORD God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount Tabor, and take with thee ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and of the children of Zebulun?
(7) And I will draw unto thee to the river Kishon Sisera, the captain of Jabin's army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into thine hand.
(8) And Barak said unto her, If thou wilt go with me, then I will go: but if thou wilt not go with me, then I will not go.
(9) And she said, I will surely go with thee: notwithstanding the journey that thou takest shall not be for thine honour; for the LORD shall sell Sisera into the hand of a woman. And Deborah arose, and went with Barak to Kedesh.

As the sun rises and sets in the world, so does the status of women rise and fall as do men in places of scripture. Women meanings not all women of power had husbands that were mean or cruel, like Vashti the queen of King Ahasuerus, the queen before Esther. Esther had used her power to gain freedom for her people despite what her king would ask of her. Yet Vashti drew a line of when her husband wanted to make her a spectacle before his friends. Not all women of power were protected in ancient world. Deborah a judge title was married. Yet she had authority in Israel. The status of women seen much different then other countries. Power for a woman meant she had some say in political world excluding warfare. She was a favorite judge of the people to have that type of power and influence over armies. It is the power to tell army to go and do that is different then the normal women power of the Old Testament. Yet this power shows the world the liberation in early times of a woman with power. Her power coming not by society rules necessarily but the power of God. If a woman gains Presidency in America it is going to change America to understanding of the liberty women have in today’s America. It only in certain areas still today women have to fight for the equality they deserve. Deborah leading of the military had to do with her faith in God and being a fair judge of her people.

The fact that the military leader wanted the prophetess to go with him to battle was unusual though men prophets often went to the battle grounds. The value of God coming in priority of leadership and advisement. Israel fought with the power of God to win in battle. Our nation military stands under the flag of America but not in the trust of God always in battle beyond the asking God for protection by the chaplains provided for religious men and women of our military. A provision necessary for spiritual and emotional guidance for the men and women of our country, perhaps the leading force of instant psychological warfare to help our fighting men and women when receiving both good and bad news from home, as well understanding their faith along with their career and family choices. The separation of military from God is another issue and individual spirituality being the main focus. The point is Deborah going to battle was not unusual request except for the fact she was a judge and a woman. For Israel women probably only fought when the enemy was at their door. Women are not helpless creatures but when faced to fight along side the men for protection of life and liberty, they will fight to be kept from being captured, trade and sold into slavery by the enemy.

Barrack desire the women’s leadership because of her relationship to God, not because of her status as a women. Her being a woman did not change Barrack mind of his need for her presence in battle, normally she would stay home with the children or family. Israel women were not seen in battlefield. This man gave her power and with that power Barrack gave Deborah the battle was not only won, but the victory given to a women and it was not Deborah. Deborah had power as judge to govern where she lived, but her she was fixing to become famous by her obedience to God

When men fail to trust in God themselves and need they will loose their relationship with God. If a woman fails to trust God in a position of power given her, she fails in leadership as men do. The understanding there people with stronger faith are often sought after for guidance is not unusual Yet with knowledge and understanding one has that same power to listen and obey God’s direction to win every time, one only needs to allow God to rule in one’s life. Yet to learn to stand in the power of the Lord to walk in his ways and not by one’s own judgment and fears is something that is developed with faith. Barrack failure to lead the army out of fear only allowed a women to win the battle for him. Deborah authority with the troops would of rise. Yet her communication with God would have become and was known. Her power to obey God and follow his voice would be told through the ages because of her status as judge. As her prophesy became known as true, her witness of being a servant would be more widely known. Deborah rose in power not because of who she was, but because of who God was in her life.

As our nation is reminded again today of our need to pray in unity for our nation, one can not deny the voices of women and not just men praying. Women are often the backbone of the family when she prays for the concerns of her family and friends daily. We need more praying women in our nation. It is the one thing women can teach each other is about the power of prayer in their life. One hears about men praying but what about the women. The charge today is women stand up and pray in unity of faith in God and let us see our family fall to there knees to serve both God and our country whether in military battlefield, home and abroad in daily living.

Dear Heavenly Father this great day of prayer for our nation may our women rise to pray along with our men. In Jesus precious name, Amen
