What Will You Do

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Luke 22:31-38 KJV
31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
33 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.
35 And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.
36 Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.
37 For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.
38 And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

Often confronted with the idea of what does our heart and mind speak and what is our very action or response in hypothesis, or theory. All or most of us get out of bed every morning on our own or with assistance, depending on your own situation. Something very routine for most people. Yet our life of change can come at a moment notice. Will we stand in our conviction or will we fall. Well we face the challenge each day can bring or chicken out. Be what we thought we never be. We all want to be that person that says if I have a nickle or a quarter in our pockets and someone needed it we would give it, but it not always the case. It simple change that says are we that uncaring not to help someone out. We must stop there and ask life is never about what we give or give not, it more about will we stand up for the weak, and the innocent in times of trial. House of Representives just passed in the House the law concerning police brutality, when it reaches the Senate I suspect there will be little rejection. What is the point, until one stands for truth one will never see positive outcome. Yes one had to die and it had to be filmed, to win victory against police brutality, because it was seen on film. The reality it not isolated case had to be confirmed to make it a potential federal law. What has man had to deal with until that time?

Injustice of the world and taking a stand with evidence is far greater the prize then the prize of something should of been done before the first act of violence. What does it mean, it means that cops in rage, anger, without thinking commited a crime of passion against a human soul, that had no choice but to die. Did the officer snap that day forget his duty to protect all lives even those he arrest? I do not know, but no one took a stand to prevent the officers actions, not even his buddies on the force. No one with sight to see prevented unjust action.

This is my point this morning Peter was told he would deny Jesus three times. Peter proclaims his loyalty. His words seem like words of truth, but were they? Jesus knew all would forsake him, because of prophesy. Peter would not be exception. Peter knew not the prophesy, or thought he was above the prophetic word. Do we think we are above the word of God? Never are we above the prophetic word. Scary thought to think God even knows our limits of following Christ to the cross.

It would be interesting to note on the crime record of the police officer that killed a man, if his attitude or action before such crime or thinking occured was normal police banter or more abusive in thought then others. Crime of action is different then going to a cross in peace and humility of Lamb. After all the man that was being arrest did resist arrest because he was being strangled and could not breath. Jesus did not. Yet here we are at the last supper table with Peter not having our panaramic view of the story of his denial of knowing Jesus.

We are at the begining of the story and Peter saying no I am ready to go into prison and even unto death with you Jesus. Peter ready to suffer for and with Jesus, but Jesus says he would deny him too. How many cops have long to stand against brutality of a fellow officer but instead have hung back. How many cops have dealt with evidence and tried to justify their own actions of being observer of a fellow cop?

What is my point, Peter thinking he will follow Jesus anywhere. Jesus began to prepare the disciples for their furture by saying for now on take clothes, money and a sword with you. Go prepared when you do ministry work. Why Jesus was fixing to be crucified and the power of Jesus to provide was not for always our desires or physical protection. I am sure there were things Jesus did with his disciples that was not normal events, maybe even providing something not necessary for daily life. To arm oneself was to protect oneself against common enemies that intent was bodily harm. There is a difference in protecting yourself against brutal attack and simple arrest by the law. Jesus going with his accusers were showing Peter and the disciples this very thing. The reason for sword was for protection against someone inflicting harm not of legal kind. Yet Jesus would be falsely accused, those accusing understood not about the resurrection. Was Peter really ready to go to the cross for false accusation or to stand in the place of one who did do a crime like Barabbas? He will learn he not yet ready to bear that burden for anyone as he denies knowing Jesus three times.

Peter would learn about his own response, just like we will tomorrow. However for now I leave you with this thought what is one thing you said you never do and have done it because of pressure from someone, or just fear in general. Was it life threating, or was peer pressure that enabled you too. Was your decision to stand alone in any situation worth standing alone? One must decide your choice. Do not be surprised if you fail to make the right decision, your humanity is only human. God knows your humanity and your failure to follow Jesus at times in life, yet it does not give you a license to sin, it is to say you can still pray and repent of things in your life where you failed, because Christ paid for all sin, including our weaknesses.

Dear Heavenly Father, give us strength to follow you and your path even when we want to fail, teach us that in our failings you still there for us. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: 1 Peter 5:6-11 KJV
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:
7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
