Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

1 Samuel 16:1-13 KJV
1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.
2 And Samuel said, How can I go? if Saul hear it, he will kill me. And the LORD said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the LORD.
3 And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will shew thee what thou shalt do: and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
4 And Samuel did that which the LORD spake, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?
5 And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice unto the LORD: sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
6 And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD'S anointed is before him.
7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
9 Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.
10 Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these.
11 And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither.
12 And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he.
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.

Part of God direction is not always choosing the one we want, but the one God has called to position. Samuel was just a boy when he went to live in the temple after his parents lent him to the Lord. Now Eli would not of seen the most likely candidate for parenthood of a little boy after raising two sons who were wicked in the eyes of God and the people. God's call on Samuels life was such when God spoke to him and Samuel after two times of hearing God's voice and thinking it was Eli calling him, finally understood it must be the Lord and Eli said tell the Lord your servant is listening. Samuel journey started with learning to listen to God, so when he went to following God concerning anointing a new king, Samuel went with reservation, because if King Saul heard of it he would be put to death. King Saul was currently God's anointed that had become rejected by God but still held hightest position in the land of Israel.

Samuel listened and obey God despite his reservation, but his obedience would come with seeing a Jesse's family of many sons and many son's being presented to Samuel. The first son contenance(heighth and stature) seem fitting for a king, but God told him no. And has each son past he told him no. Until there appeared to be no son's left of Jesse and he ask Jesse any more sons. Jesse said my youngest son is in the field keeping my sheep. Samuel told him he would not rest until the boy was brought to him. God was choosing a boy that had a beautiful countenance. Samuel annoint David to be king, and the Spirit confirmed the anointing when he came upon David from that day forward.

From the life of David we know he was chosen by God because of his heart toward God, a qualification for divine calling of any person to demonstrate the power of God in both a king's life and prophet life. Samuel was obedient prophet to the Lord despite the risk of man's understanding for doing so. However, Saul never threaten Samuel life but David he did. God's calls people that will be obedient to him. That will follow his will. I struggled in my own life of obedience to God as we all do has humans, because of what we can see and not we know by God's Spirit.

I believe in going by the Spirit when it comes to the things of God in one's life, but we all fail in our reactions in faith, in hope and even love at times in our life. Our human nature overcomes the human desire to obey God. To obey and not have reservation, would mean that our humanity has come to rest in God's will, if that is fully possible. Do we question God and his choices. Why would we, one might ask, it our human instinct. If we believe God called someone for a purpose, then we must accept that he is God's choice for the moment.

King Saul was God's choice for the moment of time, until Saul disobeyed him and as Holy Spirit left Saul and evil spirit entered into him. What does it all mean for God's choice to be be removed as in the case of Saul. Saul reached his limit of not willing to submit to God because of the cheering of the crowd. If God anoints a leader that will not follow him forever there is a reason, the people will not listen to God's choice for a time. Was Saul God's choice? (I Samuel 9) tells the answer of God choosing Saul to be king. Who is God calling even for a short time period. Why his God's will only for a short time in a person's life. Each person that chosen has a purpose. Yet what did the people learn from Saul's fall and unrepentance? What about David's fall and David's repentance. Samuel questioning but obedience?

Two things as a believer we learn who side we are on with how we react to the things of God in our life. We can accept God's will, or we can be in opposition through disobedience. Samuel got to see the rise of two kings. Both kings chosen by God, but one with a unrepented heart and another with a heart for God. Samuel struggled himself, and yet he obeyed. If you follow God's call in your life you need to obey God not just action but with your heart, for God sees the entire heart of man, and knows the lesson he will teach those called for a purpose.

Dear Heavenly Father thank you for the lessons from Prophet Samuel life of obedience, King Saul life of disobedience and King David life of a heart for God, with disobedience and repentance. Help us to follow you willfully like Samuel and when we fail to have a heart like David and help us not to be in disobedience as King Saul because of the crowd. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: 1 Samuel 9:15-17 KJV
15 Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,
16 To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.
17 And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.
