Provocation 07/26/2021
Daily Devotions: by Christina FarrisHebrews 3:1-19 KJV
1 Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
2 Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.
3 For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.
4 For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.
5 And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;
6 But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.
7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
8 Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
9 When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.
10 Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.
11 So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end;
15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
16 For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses.
17 But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness?
18 And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not?
19 So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.
One the hardest things of unbelief is to receive God's judgment, why because one does not first believe it from God and second for a believer that believes only in God's love they also except not it from their God. Did you think I was talking about a true atheist this morning the answer is no, for there are people of faith that believe not the whole Gospel or the whole word of God this morning. We all fall short in this area from time to time, because of our humanity, but is it costing you your salvation is the bigger question. On the Dailies page there is something interesting there in my statement for the month. It has to do with the consequences of our sin having benefits for other people. The consequences of our actions being a testimony of God's judgment and also in some cases his mercy because of our repentance. Yet some of us never get to the point of God's judgment being real, or forcast of what will come to some for eternity. I could talk on this subject maybe til I am to old to speak or care to speak anymore. There is point, if we fear not God enough despite his love, we missing on the key of God's judgment. We are set free through Christ, but it is not a license to sin, nor a protection from God's correction. Does it mean that once saved always saved is a false doctrine, the answer is no in regards to the very foundation of belief in Christ Jesus, which saves one from their sins, but even the devil believes and trembles but does not accept God's judgment instead makes war against God hoping to destroy God and his teaching of consequences. His complaint to God is all I did is beguile/tempt Eve in the garden I did not make her do it. Eve sin cause all generation after her to face the consequences of disobedience to God by her and Adam getting cast out of the garden of Eden for disobeying God.
Where does belief begin, it did not happen in the garden? Seth began to worship God until the end of chapter four of Genesis. They did not begin to honor God of all creation til much later, though Abel had a perfect sacrifice to the Lord, Cain did not worship,fear or obey God. Seth was their brother. There worship and honor to God before Seth or at least payment for sin before Seth. One would think the knowledge of this kind from generation to generation from Noah unto Moses would be enough of a warning to Hebrew people/Israel. However what we learn is not only the Hebrew were a rebellious people but people that lack faith. Not only lack faith with miracles but lack faith with judgment. Perhaps it was Mount Sinai and the evidence of an volcanic activity that cause some to have disbelief, or maybe the fact that they feared God who spoke to them after giving them his laws. His laws were not grievous. Only ten and easy to follow. Maybe it was God's voice that was terrifying that they needed an intercessor name Moses to speak to them, that did not help their belief. Whatever cause Israel despite all the signs, wonders and miracles of there day not to believe, their unbelief and not taking the promise land cost them their life and forty more years in the wilderness. For Israel would not enter the promise land untell the unbelievers of that time period had been buried in the wilderness.
What does the word Provocation mean in verse 8. Not to provoke the Lord. What is it speaking about not to provoke the Lord like in the days of temptation to punish. Not to harden our hearts to the Lord concerning correction warning and so forth. King David was a man that when God confronted him he repented. There is a reason God confronts us over sin, so that we sin not again in the same manner. Sin keeps us running further from God even in our belief of God. Even as a Christians our backslidding causes us to keep sinning instead of running sometimes to God, because we think we will be rejected by God. Truth of the matter as believers we not rejected but it does not mean will not face correction. Correction what truth is so as we turn to truth we can see the folly of our sin, even if our sin seems not to hurt us or others.
Many of us watch Youtube vidoes with no thought how dangerous some films of stupidity trulier are. In fact we say I wonder if I can do that, or get my pet to do that, and only land up injuring ourselves, someone else or even our pet in our attempt to mimick. The truth what is seen on tv might be better not imitated for safety reason. Some stunts done are by professionals, accidently done and caught on tape, or just plain double dare act of someone tempting another to do it. In truth that is life at its finest, because of our mistakes we see them as mistakes when we understand the consequences of mistakes. If every bad mistake would have a disclaimer that no one got hurt in the making of the video this was really stupid error in the part of the participants involved. For example people could not get monkey glue out of their hair and they landed up shaving their head bald, some even having their scalp burnt by the glue. Some saying that glue can not be that dangerous only to discover it truly was.
When God wants us to follow in pure holiness to him, he wants us to only worship who he establishes as a high priest not who we establish as a high priest. Example first part of this passage talks about the foundation or building block of Moses and the foundation building block of Jesus. Whose house were you part of Jesus or Moses? Now Moses was a faithful man to God but he still sinned and did not get to go into the promise land because he hit the rock twice that brought forth water out of the ground. Sounds like a small technicallity, but for God it was major crime against his word and instructions in front of thousands of people. Sometimes a little mistake on our part causes our correction, but did it stop the people of drinking, the answer is no. His disobedience did not cause the others to continue to complain or have more disbelief among the people because water did not come forth, instead it increased faith because water poured out. The number of times Moses hit the rock matter not to the people only to God. That about that relationship with God.
God expects us to believe him. Have you ever had someone say your were a liar until the truth was evident to them. We all want to be believed. God is no exception. After all are we not made in his image, but we are not God. Christ was made in our image and was God in the flesh. Yet he told the disciples he would rebuild the temple in three days. When Christ died, faith began again in Christ our redeemer, because he had victory over sin and death. Sin of the world caused his death, but not sin against God. For obeyed his Father's will even through his death and resurrection. The foundation of the church being laid with his resurrection. Moses only could bring people to God, he was not God, he was not to be worshipped in equality with God. Gifts, memorials or symbolic memory of Moses walk with God is not wrong, but he had no power that was his own, but the power of God sent God's Holy Spirit guiding and directing his pathway and instructing him in the ways to do miracles according to his word. Christ's power was not just his own, but he surpressed it and became like human being unto his death and then he rose again demonstrating his power as Savior and Lord, to glory of God the Father. The perfect High Priest and perfect for us to follow through out eternity because Christ is the word of God and is God. Let us not reject the Lord's word and hold to it all the days of our life, remember in our perfection we have an advocator, and payment for our sin.
Dear Heavenly Father help us to trust in your word and to follow your instruction, because of Christ Jesus, who is our redeemer and friend. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;
13 And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.
14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:
15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;
16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
17 For ye know how that afterward, when he would have inherited the blessing, he was rejected: for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.
18 For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched, and that burned with fire, nor unto blackness, and darkness, and tempest,
19 And the sound of a trumpet, and the voice of words; which voice they that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more:
20 (For they could not endure that which was commanded, And if so much as a beast touch the mountain, it shall be stoned, or thrust through with a dart:
21 And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)
22 But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,
23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
24 And to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel.
25 See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:
26 Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
27 And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
28 Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
29 For our God is a consuming fire.
