Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris

Matthew 13:18-30 KJV
(18) Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower.
(19) When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.
(20) But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;
(21) Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended.
(22) He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
(23) But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
(24) Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:
(25) But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.
(26) But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.
(27) So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?
(28) He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
(29) But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.
(30) Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

Anyone playing sports knows that after one receives the ball they must either run with it or toss it to score a point. Godís word is meant to be received and carried to the goal line, but it is also meant to be toss to those around you. As disciples of God it is our duty to sow the seed of truth of Godís word to those around us. Yet when doing so the seed does not always land in fertile places. Sometimes a seed never takes root, so when hardship comes or tribulation they are destroyed or cut off. Yet it maybe that those that going to hardship never knew how to face it with Jesus, they knew they could rely, but had not retained or grabbed hold of Godís word completely. People going through trial are sometimes like a fish that is caught and is flipping and flopping on the shore trying hard to get to water. Not knowing how far it might have to travel to get to the water of safety. One either learns to trust in God and rely on his word before a trial or during the storms in life. Yet until a trial comes, one faith has not been tested to be proven rooted in the ground. Nice thing about God is he has the ability or dig a hole and stick the word in until we are mature enough to handle the trials and tribulations in our journey by learning to trust in Him. Some people are like samplings in a bucket of water, needing only to be planted in fertile soil to hopefully grow.

However seeds are a little different then samplings, they must take root to grow. Dampen a paper towel and put seeds between and see if the seeds will not sprout. Yet even sprouts can not survive long without dirt and soil to make it grow. Out in the heat from the sun to long and it will dry up with no chance to grow when planted, it only buried to never return. Faith is like that if one never is planted in fertile soil of faith. In soil that nurtures faith, hope and love. The scorching heat is like trial and not enough water or production of the earth soil to produce growing, it can not and will not grow. Add the truth to fertilize faith and you have seeds growing in fertilized soil and love that encourages, new growth. If a tornado comes the roots hold in the ground by the power of God. If hurricane comes, the rain is soaked up and used for Godís glory. And if the heat bakes the tender plants, the water of God cools the plant with truth.

Actually the story of the sower is a warning to those receiving the word of God, they must remain in soil that will help them produce, in order to endure with whatever life deals. For those are not planted by the word of God or planted in fertile soil, often find itself rejecting and denying the word of God and its truth. Faith comes from hearing the word of God but one has to be able to receive it and pass it on.

Is your heart fertile soil for the Lord to receive the word of God has truth and to receive His salvation plan through Christ Jesus. Can you receive the word of life into your heart today. You can not become a plant without a seed from God, all you are is dirt or dried up sprout with to much sun or water and no soil.

Dear Heavenly Father may the truth of Godís word be planted in our hearts and may it find fertile soil that produces good fruit of love, hope and faith. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
