16 Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.
17 And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.
18 And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.
19 And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.
20 And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him. The moment someone says to you come follow? What is your immediate reaction? The words follow implies to come behind me, get behind me and walk where i walk. We all have played follow the leader or even Simeon sez. but few of us would follow at the words come follow unless for a particular reason that we understood clearly. A dog barking tirelessly at a stranger and passing back and forth gets more attention then a stranger saying come follow me, unless for a particular reason. Who was Jesus to request Peter and his brother, and James and John to follow him and tell them he would make them fisher's of men. We know that Andrew Peter's brother, had been a witness at the baptism according to the book of John. We know that he had followed Jesus that day and even gotten his brother Peter and told him he had found the Christ. Yet what else do we know we know that Jesus had a way of speaking with authority that compelled and still compels people to listen. Jesus told them to come follow him, he did so with authority, but not only authority, but those he called had knowledge of baptism in the Jordan river and God declaring Jesus his Son. They were willing to forsake all to follow Jesus. Yet they never truly gave it all up in one since, for they would be seen fishing time after time on the road of Jesus' ministry.
Something else to note about the beginning of the first call to the disciples that they were willing to leave everything behind immediately. They did not put up their nets or boat, leaving it for someone else to tend too and a mess of fish account to Luke's account. Leaving their work and following to be taught how to catch men. Did they think they joined the arm forces or police task force? I wonder if they understood what Jesus was calling them to do, but to preach, to speak in the name of Jesus with authority to heal, to cast out demons and even raise the dead, yet I do not remember a record of a disciple raising the dead. There might be one account in scripture. The point being they were called to minister to people, to reach out and share the gospel of Jesus, and the miracles they witness and also became a part of being an instrument for the God to use in the ministry as a witness for him.
Your sins are washed away by repentance, In Luke acount, a different take on the first call to the fishermen is seen with the men having fished all night and Jesus telling them to cast their nets on the other side of the boat. Peter then repenting and saying I am a sinful man tell Jesus to depart from him. Jesus would tell them to come and be fisher's of men. First act of repentance is admitting sin, second part is turning away from sin. Disciples left all when Jesus request them to come follow, Jesus was asking them to turn away from sin and follow. Of course that is reading between the lines a little. Yet it shows the process of the call from Jesus. When we confess Jesus is Lord and that we are a sinner, and we desire to turn from sin to follow Jesus that the first step of faith.
The very act of admitting sin, is the beginning point that leads to repentance, in regards to your choice to turn from sin and follow after Jesus. Not everyone is called to be a vocational preacher or teacher, but all is called to share their faith. First step is to learn about faith and ministry by participation. How does one participate, in modern world one might join a church and get involved with others that have experience in ministry, and others are called as Paul to step out and start preaching the Gospel/sharing the Gospel of Jesus where ever he went. Compelled by the Holy Spirit. One must learn about fheir faith. One Paul was already education in the Jewish law by being part of the priesthood. Two disciples would of known about their faith because of Jewish heritage and upbringing to know the laws of faith, but not necessarily how to share about God beyond everyday conversation that might spring up. Paul experience different then the early disciples of Jesus, but his call no different in one since. He also spent time with the apostles to learn the stories of Jesus.
When one ask Jesus to come into their heart and life, Jesus call to follow is next, meaning he not asking you just to repent or turn from sin, but to begin to follow his word, his action and his ministry in regards to sharing the Gospel of faith. Sharing the Gospel should be as natural as sharing the latest news story, but it will be by God's Spirit and leading. The testimony is also a sign of a believer, but even devil can share a fake testimony, but what he can not do immeditate does not have the ability to pray in the name of Jesus and see the power of God being demonstrated in the life of another. He might do miracles and signs and wonders, but there something God children have authority in and that is power over demons in Jesus name, with fasting and prayer. Devil can not cast out a devil without dividing his kingdom.
Casting out of devils maybe not even spiritual in the sense of a demon, it maybe the casting away of sin with the authority God gives through payment of sin through Christ Jesus. We will talk about authority of demons tomorrow lesson, but lets begin with tossing out of sin first and for most. That were faith says I do not need the old way, I need a new ways of thinking and doing. Jesus I am going to follow you and your word to get rid of sin in my life and I going to allow you to be payment for my sin. I going to follow your Spirit to rid myself of sin. I going to follow you and leave behind all I have and allow you to restore those things in my life as I need them that are not harmful to me. For example Peter would continue to fish and so would James and John. Yet for the moment they left all to follow Jesus. Work was not sin. Yet there was other things that need removal, doubt being one perhaps, but that would come too with the resurrection of Jesus.Yet we know from Mark account they were willing to go learn what Jesus was going to teach them, they were willing to follow.
Dear Heavenly Father, as some today choose to repent of sin and turn to follow you, help them to step in faith to study to know your word and your teaching. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord.
9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken:
10 And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men.
11 And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him.
