Exodus 20:18-26 KJV
(18) And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off.
(19) And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die.
(20) And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.
(21) And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.
(22) And the LORD said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven.
(23) Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold.
(24) An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.
(25) And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it.
(26) Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon. |
The children of Israel had just heard the reading of the Ten Commandments for the first time, then God spoke to Israel through what some might say is silly superstition. The mountain smoked and lighting from the mountain and told Moses they were afraid of God and that He might kill them if they talk to Him. It more of go talk to God for us Moses in case we might die. It is interesting how ancient world related volcanic activity to God. Israel was not the only people of the ancient world. Yet Israel God even over time was more then smoke, lighting from a mountain. The plagues of Israel might be explained away to a degree, but what can not be explained is a burning bush to Moses that never burnt up and the voice of an angel and then His God coming forth to his ears.
The voice of God is like a trumpet the word of God says. Yet Israel heard more then just a trumpet they seen smoke and lightening on the mountain. Did the things of nature interfer with hearing and knowing God? God clear about the type of altar that is built in the Old Testament to give a peace and gift offering to Him. Just a simple campfire will do with a rocks, nothing fasten by human hands. It seems in conflict with the tabernacle and the temple. God had no desire for man to make graven images, yet one was forming with a mountain because of the smoke and lightening. Mount Sinai would be consider a sacred mountain to Israel.
Yet God speaking had little to do with what they saw only what they heard. God’s voice is said to be like a trumpet. God voice is said to be quiet. Yet God voice is spoken so the individual will know it is God. Israel did not want to talk to God. Yet it was God that freed them from Egypt and even protected them crossing the Red sea. Man fear God because of their unworthiness to be in his holy presences. Man was required to holy in the presences of God. To be purified from sin. God told Moses in the story of the burning bush to take off his sandals he was on Holy Ground. In the passage of scripture the people feared they were not holy before God. Moses explained to the people God came to approve or test them, so that they will not sin against Him. In other words make appearance so they have a fear of who He is. To testify of His existence to them. This is why the cloud of smoke, and lightening comes. It is to testify of the power of God. Do we ourselves see the power of God in the storms of life, whether by natural or spiritual forces. Elijah stood on the mountain and seen a whirl wind and fire but God was not in these things. God showed Elijah His power, but His power was not God. God is more then demonstration of natural fury, but a spiritual being that speaks to the heart of man. God power and control is not to consume but to show His reality and power.
Atheist read scripture only seeing the natural force of creation, but not the one behind the forces. We must look at spirituality of faith and see a living God/ being of super power we do not possess. Our power being limited by us not being God. Yet through the name of Jesus we see miracles come. Yet we have no power to control what God’s will is. We pray in the name of Jesus for His will to be done, and yet if it not mean it happens according to our design. It must be a prayer of the Spirit and not a prayer of man. Yet we claim if we ask it will be, because God’s word says so and that be good enough for me. Yet Paul is quick to explain if we pray according to God’s will, then what we ask will be done. Many miracles and things were done by Moses to show Israel the power of God. Yet they feared the power of God. Israel received things from God’s power, from manna in the wilderness and water from a rock. Yet these things did not scare them but they took the manna and the water readily for human consumption. They fear of God never kept man from receiving the things they needed readily.
The thing we need to remember our fear of God should never stop us from coming before His presence. For with faith our sins upon confession are forgiven. Through the blood of Jesus is atonement now made for every man, because God loved us. Our only choice is to receive His God’s salvation through Christ Jesus. If God has promised we can richly believe it. The law given to Moses was to show man the error of their ways and they were not God. God could of killed Israel at any point along the road of the wilderness and yet He did not. Instead He choose them to give them time to believe and receive His grace. Israel faith would cost them forty years in the wilderness instead going immediately into the promise land out fear of the giants in the land. Is your fear of God holding you back to where you will not talk to God, by seeking and asking of Him. God loves you let not your fear keep you from Him today.
Dear Heavenly Father help me to talk to you and not allow my fear coming to your throne keep me from speaking with you on the things of my heart and soul. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
