Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Genesis 22:1-18 KJV
1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.
6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.
7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?
8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
9 And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood.
10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I.
12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son.
14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.
15 And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:
17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
18 And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

The sacrificial giving to God. How much love do you have for God? I wonder everytime I read this story how much do we has human's have to love God. God was willing to send his Son to us to allow Him to be sacrificed for our sins because of his love for us. Yet God was requiring Abraham to show his love by sacrificing his Son to God. I done this story a few months back or last year perhaps around this time. Yet the story changes not of what and who God was requiring Abraham to sacrifice. Abraham had sacrificed his son Ishmael for Sarah. Hagar was sent to the desert toward her homeland with provisions and her son that because they mocked his son Isaac.

If we go back a chapter in Genesis God tells Abraham to listen to Sarah. Yet by listening to Sarah he had given up his obedience to God probably not, but perhaps there was a question to Abraham's infidelity to God. Abraham obey Sarah to commit adultery with her handmaiden, only when Hagar and her son began to cause issues then did Abraham hear and obey Sarah about what to do about the situation. It was Abraham and Sarah sin that caused Hagar to teach her son to disrespect Sarah despite the fact Sarah bore Abraham a son in old age. Sin was easy to dispose or to get rid of by sending Hagar away. However would Abraham give up his son for God because of his with Hagar. In other words payment to God for sin of unbelief that he have a child by Sarah, a child of promise. Despite Sarah and Abraham sin God blessed them with the son of promise.

It would not matter if Abraham still gave Hagar support, we know at the time of Abraham death that Ishmael stood at the grave with Isaac. Yet the promise was still Isaac. Yet the gift of promise was given by God to his children of Israel. Why then did Abraham have to sacrifice his son to prove to himself that he still loved God more then anyone else he might obey. We know how the story ends, with God stopping Abraham from sacrificing his son, and then God repeating the original promise to Abraham of him being a Father of a great nation and many nations.

Abraham's love was proven by not withholding anything from God. God's love is proven to us by his willingness to send his own Son to be the payment for our sins, and for the original sin of Eve allowing herself to be deceived by the serpent. Sarah sin was because of Abraham constant trying to have children because of the promise of God I suspect. She was eighty years old when she had a son name Isaac. Here the thing Abraham sin to and so did Adam. Our nature was made with choices, and not always healthy for us, but when we give our sin up for God, it is expression of our love for him. Though Christ is God's peace offering to man, God also take back up his word for you and me to live by. His word does not change, but he lays it down to save us from our sin, that we might understand our value to Him. That He loves us and wants to redeem us if we will only believe. He sent Christ to help us understand how we can be set free by the yoke of bondage called sin. By Holy Spirit you teach and guide us in all truth of your word.

Dear Lord as we as believers give up our sin, help us realize your love for us is great, for you redeem us because of our faith in you by sending us your Son to show us the way home. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
