Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

Luke 2:40-52 KJV
40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.
41 Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover.
42 And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast.
43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.

One the greatest mystery about Christ is his growing up years. There are apocraphal books of the Bible, that are not included in the Bible, because some feel there not accurate writting or anointed writtings. I read a few books of Apocraphal, seen nothing off hand about them, but apparently church leaders when putting scripture together had a problem with their origins. That okay. I do not subscribe to it as doctrine, but they can be fun to read. What I suggest if you looking for things related to Christ childhood you start there, and realize some consider them myths or legends. However, the Gospel of Luke in the Bible records Jesus childhood in relationship to a trip to the temple(His Father's house) and how he grew up with wisdom, stature and understanding of scripture. At age twelve Jesus was already running off during the trip to spend time in the temple. Jesus spent time talking to the doctors and asking them questions and answers theirs. They were amazed at his understanding.

When Mary and Joseph left to go home, they thought Jesus was with family and he was in the temple. This upset Jesus earthly parents but Jesus told them he was about his Father's business, meaning God. This was one more thing Mary would ponder it in her heart. Was Jesus disobedient or just causing worry because they knew not where Jesus was? After all Mary and Joseph on the return trip had traveled a day outside of Jerusalem, when they discovered Jesus not there. It is easy to misplace a child if you think he or she is somewhere he is not, especially when they have two legs in which to walk or go places unexpected by a parent. They may of even told him to stay close to family to not get lost in Jerusalem. Had Jesus had such instruction, He was in his Father's house, meaning God's house, his heavenly Father's house. Yet once found, he returns with Mary and Joseph and is obedient growing in wisdom and stature(age/maturity).

It helps us to know Jesus had to grow like you and I in respect to knowledge/wisdom and maturity. Jesus was still learning humanity and learning really is not the right word, for with Jesus being both God's only Son and God in human flesh as the Word of God, we can understand is knowledge already existed. Yet he grew and aged like any male person.

If we can learn something about our own maturity both in humanity and faith, we all grow in knowledge and wisdom of God's word and his Spirit. We also grow as humans and mature as humans. Things we learn at perhaps age 20 is not the same as age 50. Yet each level has a degree of wisdom and knowledge. Perhaps this can be explained as Jesus matured his knowledge and understanding was clear to those in his world, not so much he was learning, but others around him were understanding Jesus had wisdom and knowledge.

To explain Jesus growing up, we can understand that he grew humanly, his body had to develop, he had to go through puberty and had to go through body changes. Yet with all this in mind he did not become a minister tell around age 33. He was baptized, faced temptation and performed miracles. He had to wait on his time to minister and to do the will of God for his human life. In fact he was a carpenter son and no doubt he also followed in his earthly father's trade. No evidence of it, but it is probably so. Sometimes we have to wait on our time to minister. If we could tell young children that, we also find some ministering from the day of salvation, with the knowledge by the Holy Spirit. It occurs but it not every case. Best to allow your children to grow up and minister as God directs them too, so when they go through adolescents, and rough years, their not frown upon by the world who understand not the call of God on a person's life. The struggle of the young people that are saved, is part of their journey and something perhaps they have to go through to mature in faith. Everyone has their own battles no matter the age they are saved. Your age is not your level of maturity in faith, knowledge or wisdom. Faith must come with time and growth.

Dear Heavenly Father help us to follow our call by your Spirit to follow as we mature in faith, and humanity. Help us to know your will for our life. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study: 2 Timothy 4:2 KJV
2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

Romans 12:6-7 KJV
6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;
7 Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching;
