God's Story: Lesson 18 12/18/2021
Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris Luke 2:8-20 KJV
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
The location of the shepherds is interesting, because it would of been the same fields probably David had tended sheep in. In fact it is possible it was King David's ancestors in the fields, maybe his King David siblings descendant and grandchildren. We do not know, but it an interesting thought this morning with the question of who were these shepherds in the field. God first told the shepherds of the priesthood by the Angel Gabriel that the Messiah was coming, yet they seem to be quiet about beyond the witnesses spread the news of the forerunner of Christ far and wide that knew Zacharias and Elizabeth. The Angel Gabriel then speaks to the shepherds in the fields, that tended the sheep and this stirred up quiet a curiousity to them. This was not an ordinary baby, this was one placed in a manger, one wrapped in swaddling clothes that would be the Savior of the world.
I thinking the other day how often we fail at spreading of good news. It slips our minds after someone tells us, or it may seems trivial at the moment but it reality it is good news that can be told with excitement. It seems the world carries only bad news and not exciting news. News stations have tried their best with announcing good news, good tidings of joy in the world. The politicians do the same, if nothing more then to make themselves look good perhaps, but it does help to see joy only and not the bad news of the world. It is not reality of the world, nor should it be complete, some bad news is a warning, where joyful news should bring excitement to the heart. Shepherds heard and receive the news gladly and need to investigate it. Seldom is news investigated beyond the fact there is treasure at the end of it. Like a church passing out free food to rich and poor alike, that is good news to share, but it also something else, it is telling their is a reward if you go and check things out. A treasure hunt is such a journey, looking for the prize. And so the shepherds made haste and found the greatest treasure of the world, a Savior which was Christ the Lord.
Mary would ponder what was told to her by the shepherds of the angels telling the story of the Savior's birth. No doubt Mary treasure was hidden in the words of the shepherds and in her Savior. Let us hold to the treasure of the birth of Christ. The baby in the manger, as the shepherds did and spread the good news the Savior has been born.
Dear Heavenly Father, help us to share the good news that Jesus Christ been born and died and rose again to set all mankind free from sin. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
