A Platted Crown
12/26/2019

Daily Devotions:
by Christina Farris

John 19:1-22 KJV
1 Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.
2 And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,
3 And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.
4 Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.
5 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!
6 When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.
7 The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.
8 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;
9 And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.
10 Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?
11 Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.
12 And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.
13 When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.
14 And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!
15 But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.
16 Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.
17 And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:
18 Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.
19 And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.
20 This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.
21 Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.
22 Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

If you ever worked in a flower shop or grew roses you know what is to have a thorn in your thumb. Yet often the thorns are cut away so one is not pricked when working with them and those receiving the roses are not stuck by them. If you walk the woods, you will find in brush thorns and briars. Many times walking in the woods, I dealt with thorns and despite the length of my denim jeans, the thorns would grab at my coat or long sleeves. Wearing the protective gear is essential for a hike in the woods. Yet with protection thorns are prickly and scratchy. Now imagine a thorn being taken and braided and placed on your head. Someone took the time to platte for mockery of Christ Lordship and Kingship on the day of his crucifixion. No one ever talks about can the beginning of physical pain of Christ but it began with the crown of thorns, then the cruel mocking of the soldier that day. Pilate like Jesus, but he had problem an angry mob that wanted to crucify Jesus. He even tried to wash his hands of the problem. Yet he is forced to order the crucifixion of the man because of the crowd. The crowd declared Jesus was not their king for Caesar was their king. They declared they rather have Caesar for king.

When we stop to think for a moment what kind of king was Jesus? The star in the sky declared him king from infancy. He was sought out to be killed from the time of his birth and through out his ministry. If we examine Christ ministry on earth, what kind of king would he have been if not crucified, if the power had been for him to take the kingdom in his humanity, he would of been ruler that people would come to like Solomon to hear the wisdom and truth. He would of been a king that would shepherd his people, healing their wounds. Jesus ability to execute the law to cause people to either repent or face punishment would have existed. Jesus as he walked the earth did not execute judgment in the since of criminals going to jail, but executed judgment in the since of guilt, to cause even the rich young ruler to walk away, when he was not willing to give up all he had to follow. Most will never follow a king that says give up what you have and give it away. Yet in death we are force to give all we have up for we can not take what we have with us. Did not Jesus lead the crowd as a shepherd would lead sheep. Did Jesus not share the wisdom of God with the people as King Solomon. Often people look for a king to be more like their own desires of a king and not the king God has chosen for them. The problem with using Solomon as example is Solomon's idolatry, and his sexual immorality. Jesus was without sin, without bowing to the enemy, but giving to the enemy what was theirs even to paying taxes. He went about doing good to destory the lies of the devil. Jesus is found to be guilty of declaring himself to be king and act against the power of King of Rome. The crowd had declared him king on the day of the Triumphal entry. Jesus had gotten his disciple to get an ass and a colt to ride on in the tradition of a king for coronation.

Pilate tried his best to let Jesus go. Yet what we see happening is the crowd told Pilate they did not declare him king, Jesus declared himself a king, which is true. It much like a man declaring his own presidency. Trump did not announce he was running in 2016 until Obama told him when he became president he could make those decisions. Then President Trump put his hat in 2016 election. Democrates are you trying to undo what you started by encouraging a republican to run. Jesus had no encouragement to be king or even priest. He was discourage by the priesthood from the beginning of ministry, but the crowd loved the miracles and the wonders he performed. The people were at a comfort level under the Roman government for it was a time of peace and not war. They saw the conviction of the religious leaders and out of fear went with their judgment. The Democrates left a loop hole to get the impeachment trial thrown out. What this means Trump can have it over turn. Yet if Democrates fail to uphold the constitution or willing decided to put that loop hole in to win the election, they themselves can go to trial while President Trump walks.

The debate begins if all the miracles are true why would they reject Christ. The Priesthood did not like his teaching, they were stumped, amazed and humilitated. The crowd followed Jesus, until the trial at night before the religious council. One trial can turn the world against you in a moment. Television and media can sabatoge a leader or person in one moment. The rating go crashing to the floor, only to be raised by the proof his way works. If that fails the campaign trials of yesteryear shows his fame. No the lies of "it is a hoax" controlled the crowded and the fan base for the next election for those that did not believe Trump could be impeached. The simple fact the control of crowd is how leaders win their campaigns.

Jesus had feed the crowd and the crowd continued to try and follow him. He set up the crowd by the feeding. One can feed a crowd to much, and fail to see the anger of the mob because they are still starving for more and no one wants to feed them. Sheep without a shepherd will locate another. Always ready to betray the shepherd who will protect them from raging wolves not realizing the power of the shepherd willing to protect them. One beady eye and one walking around the sheep fold, and sheep are in a panic running in circles. If the shepherd does not kill the wolf to protect the sheep, the wolf has lunch and the sheep are then scatter out of the sheepfold. Jesus knew his disciples were trained to lead the crowd, but first they had to be scatter for a day or two, before he gather them all together once again. In his resurrection his kingship is fully seen as will has his lordship. The power to be an overcomer of death, the punishment for all sin. The sin of the crowd is the rejection of Christ Lordship and kingship. It is the same rejection has believers we need to be aware of. The crown of Christ is seen in Zachariah 9 with precious stones in the crown. These stones are the priesthood of Christ. Christ being the king, chief cornerstone, and Shepherd of the flock. Those that followed in his steps, found themselves mayrter for faith, but also a minister of faith leading people to Christ and God. Paul was trainer to the churches, not only missionary, Peter was leader on the day of pentecoste.

What kind of leader are we looking for? The disciples intent was not to establish themselves as a god, but just a messenger/servant/slave of the grace of God. Despite those that wish to destroy God, God's grace will still abound. No Bible scholar needs to deem themselves as anything great, but only declare Jesus is King, Lord and Shepherd of the soul if one will allow him in. The world establishes who they follow, those that follow God know the power of God to control, lead, and protect his people. The leader of man that man might choose might not be godly, so we see a ruler not of God but of the world, seeking the things of the world to control. People want jobs, security, hope, peace and to live however they want. Yet even there is control within the legal law. We choose who we follow and the time of leadership we desire. Some do not understand that God is still in control, his authority above all others or the fact he allows good and bad leaders to rise.

When we think of the way the world treat Christ, they were choosing that day who they wanted to be king and who they wanted to mock. President Trump is mocked by some and lifted up by others. Christ is and will always be mocked or glorified by others. Some will see the resurrection as proof of Christ victory over sin and death giving the world hope and some will see the Christ death like the thief that mocked him, that says you can free others why can you not free yourself. Christ did free himself through going through the process of death, but at the same time he destroyed death by raising back up to sit in the heavenlies at the Father's right hand. With Christ power to raise back up for eternity, The power of darkeness is destroyed. The sin of the world saying crucified Jesus. It was the rejection of God's chosen king that destroy man, while faith in him brings life anew. The world may of given him a crown of throne platted but the Lord gave his Son a golden crown with jewels in it.

God's people might not have earthly throne, but they have a heavenly throne. They stand around the throne to worship. They cast their crowns at Christ feet giving up their authority to Him. Today we choose to be a king, queen, or leader or we cast those title down to declare Christ is Lord. His power and authority to raise back up is not ours, but his. He has the ability to raise us up when we submit to Him and keep him on the throne of our hearts. Others may mock but Christ will raise us back up as we submit ourselves to him.

Dear Heavenly Father may us not give Christ a thorny crown made of briars, but the golden crown of our life and our heart to rule in our life. In Jesus precious name, Amen.

Continual Scripture Study for Devotion:

Zechariah 9:16-17 KJV
16 And the LORD their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.
17 For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids.

Revelation 4:10-11 KJV
10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying,
11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
