Christian Charity 12/20/2016
Daily Devotions: by Christina Farris1 Corinthians 13:1-13 KJV
(1) Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
(2) And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
(3) And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
(4) Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
(5) Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
(6) Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
(7) Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
(8) Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
(9) For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
(10) But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
(11) When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
(12) For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
(13) And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. |
All month Santa Claus has been making his appearance in many towns across our nation, in shopping malls, schools, libraries, public building and squares. Even made the Thanksgiving Day Parade and Christmas Parade. However did the story of Christ come to everyone, no I serious doubt His birthday is celebrated by all. Two special people in history, one more important then the other, yet most countries recognize at least Santa because of his charity work with children in orphanages. After all St. Nick first journey was to the little girls and boys, in orphanage to bring them toys. Yet the many legends that are told about St. Nick, nothing compares to the story of Jesus who came to demonstrate how to live and die for our sins. The legend of Santa spread through out the ages of time, to include the world in the celebration of Christmas. He is perhaps a mascot to charity and giving. Yet God is the greatest giver of charity of them all for He is Charity. Charity meaning love in the I Corinthian passage.
Charity to the world is one way of showing kindness to others. It not different in one since for a believer, yet for a believer we are giving in the name of Lord. Giving because God loved us first and sent His Son. Others give to gain something back. Some give thinking perhaps it will be return to them someday. Christian give with the idea God will bless them for giving. People are people despite the charity of the heart. Yet to give and not expect anything back has it own reward.
God gave his Son not just out of love, but to give us hope and faith. There is time when speaking in other language will cease, yet the gift and hope and faith of better world remains. One day we will speak a common language by the Holy Spirit. A language with no interpretation is needed. Those of us as believers ever been with other believers and witnessed this, understand that language is interoperated by God’s Spirit, no word or language but by the Spirit is then necessary. Yet the expression of Charity is still greater, because even to understand something and to know is not the same as showing or receiving compassion.
God first gift to man was his wife and his second gift was a fur coat because of sin. God never stopped giving to the world or to his creation. God also takes away, but He rather give to us. See God knows the importance of what He gives. He knows we can not do without certain things. Lottie Moon a Christian missionary gave her own rations to needy Children. Many Baptist Church still take offering in her honor at Christmas, because it represents the charity work on the mission field away from home. Nothing wrong with celebration of giving at Christmas or the reminders of Christmas. Yet it is better never to forget the true meaning of Christmas and our Savior birth. God taught charity first even to the sinful man. Let us not forget to give even to those less fortunate, and those that perhaps do not deserve it.
Dear Heavenly Father help us to remember the true meaning of Christmas and that you were the first to show compassion to man despite their sin. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
